Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Love the Welsummer egg!  The first girl looks more like Barnevelder, not a GLW but still could be a Cornish.  The second definitely looks like a Cornish.  What kind of comb does the first have?  Looks like a small bunched up single comb or a big pea comb.

Awesome egg! Hopefully my wellie lays them like that!
I had a pullet from meyers that looked just like that. I debated back and forth barnevelder, or dark cornish. It had the pretty lacing of a barnevelder, but with the red skin around the eyes, I'm pretty sure it was a dark cornish, had the body shape of one. Mine was eaten  by a predator:hit .
The more I look at your pics, I can't tell for sure, :idunno

I'm throwing my guess in as Barnevelder. Totally just a guess based on pics though, no personal experience with either breed.

Thank you all for your input, I guess her breed is unknown, I am not sure what color of eggs a Barnevelder lays but hers are cream colored. She is one of the only really light eggs we get, we do get almost a white egg from one of our EE. The rainbow pack was fun to see grow up and turn into beautiful chickens. We got seven or possible eight different breeds from the pack, has allowed me to experience different breeds and pro's and con's of both.

I have a question about Brahama's for those that have them, what do you think of feathered feet? I ask because I love the look/coloring of the Buff but really don't think I want feathered feet, aren't BCM feathered feet as well, don't remember. I just have concerns as we have alot of dirt and mud in the winter and just imagine lots of dirty/muddy covered eggs.

Hmm yeah I think she may be an atypical Barnvelder or Cornish. Barnvelders are supposed to have somewhat dark eggs, not as dark as a Marans though and like any breed they can range. The Dark Cornish eggs picture on Meyer's site look light. Wyandotte eggs are light too but she really doesn't look like one.

We don't have Brahma's yet (we are getting one in the spring) but we do have a BCM with lightly feathered feet, they aren't a big deal, Brahma's are supposed to be more feathered and on the legs, though I think the hatchery ones are little less so. I did read that while Brahmas can do well in the cold they don't do as well in the damp cold because of their feathered feet trapping moisture. While I can't convince the husband to cover our run this year, maybe I can work on him for next year for that reason. Gotta lessen the mud :)

I agree on our little Sweet Pea, I just came up with that name. She is small not bantam size but smaller than others. Any whoooo, I think she is a mutt hatchery chick maybe. I guess when I do the egg vent test thingy I will know for sure what color egg she lays. I agree that in my research I found that Barnelders lay dark eggs....

Also thanks on the info on the Brahma, I guess they would probably be a no go since we have snow and mud. We have to finish covering or roofing the run, for now I tarped. Since I did that the eggs are much cleaner.

They can be featherd or clean leg I heard the SOP in England is clean legs?
SOP? Polish?

Hey, all, sorry I haven't been very active here! I just wanted to pop in and share that my Meyer Black Copper Marans, Georgie, laid her first egg today! My Meyer babies are 28 weeks and 5 days old today. :D

It's not super dark, but darker than any of my other brown-eggers' eggs, so I'm happy! :D Also, that lighter brown egg in the second picture may be my (non-Meyer) Bielefelder's second egg, but I haven't confirmed that yet.

And since I'm fairly sure I forgot to post their 6-month pictures here, here is Georgie girl:

And the rest of the babies; Miss Elda the Silver Gray Dorking and her obligatory cuddle picture:

Lovely Louise the BCM:

And Miss Mabel the Welsummer:

And, well, why not? The other babies, who are not from Meyer:

Poppy the cream Legbar (who was having nothing of the photo op that day) :

And Violet the Bielefelder, who is clearly not amused:

That snow disappeared not long after these pics were taken, so it's kind of odd for me to share these pics at this point... But oh well. :D

SOP is Standard of Perfection ;)

Lots of people have Brahmas anyways and I would wait to hear from some them before you decide.

Congrats to you and Georgie! That is a very pretty speckled egg! And you may never know her ink jets may just be firing up. It took Morgaine a week or so to start laying nice dark ones. And now we're on the eighth day of no eggs from her. Sigh. Mabel is so pretty!

[@]COChix[@] I have to chime in on the Brahma conversation because I love them so much. I think they actually suffer more in the hot weather than the cold. I don't have snow, but plenty of mud. It's not any more an issue for my brahmas as it is for anyone else. I do throw whatever I rake up into the run. Not sure if that's made any difference in muddy feet or cleaner eggs. I don't think it makes much difference. But I think if you like them, you should get one.

Are you sure that egg came from your maran? Welsummers lay dark spotted eggs, ive saw some that lay as dark as a maran.
Boy your Silver Gray Dorking IS cute!

Nancy your hawk scare gave me nightmares last night, there was a hawk and an owl on top of our run during free range time in the dream and I was trying to protect the girls outside and inside the run, one of the raptors went in because the door was open, I rushed over there and miraculously no one was hurt but I did have a pretty white EE in the run, not sure where the hawk went, perhaps it turned into the EE in which case my subconscious mind is pretty awesome, lol. (Actually that dream wasnt nearly as bad as the one I had the night before where my Kindergarten son and I had forgotten he had a book report due! I was scrambling to write it for him and kept him home a day. Finally my own school stress dreams have translated into the realm of parenthood.) We had a hawk stalk our run this summer but none have been so bold or desperate this fall/winter. Fingers crossed. I would be so worried my girls were living in terror.
Oh how scary!! Glad it was just a dream

But It's been terrible here and I guess the hawks are here for the winter? My neighbor who is a huge hummingbird person and knows a bit about hawks said she has been seeing them too an is afraid for her 25lb dog... I tried to tell her that her dog is safe from the hawks but she doesn't believe me. My sister has a friend who was looking out her kitchen window a few years ago and saw a huge hawk land on her chihuahua and carry it away!!! But a 25 lb dog... I don't think so.
I didn't free range the girls last winter; I hadn't even started until last spring; so I didn't know it was like this.
And an all white EE... I wonder if they could breed them or is it just pot luck? I don't know genetics to figure that out. But I bet lots of people would want them... they are so pretty.
And I STILL dream I'm waiting tables in a restaurant and forgot someone's water or dropped their food and I haven't waitressed in (cough cough) almost 30 years!!!!

I had a Buff Brahma and it was never an issue of the feet being really bad. I never even gave it a second thought. I have a white Silkie now with feathered feet and no issues as of yet. I have sand in my run but part of it gets pretty muddy and it's no biggie.
I would give it a try if you really like the Brahmas! I think they're pretty but just not good layers from my own experience. But neither is my Silkie ... I don't mind a couple of hens that don't lay a ton of eggs.
