Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Awww, thanks for posting the chick pics! They're all so cute, but the BLRW still in the fluffy stage is adorable. Some of the pictures of her wing tips make them look really grey, not dark black, and I thought that was how you can tell color on the babies--I hope she turns out to be blue laced for you! I can't wait to see how your Olive Egger grows up, too. I would get one if I could be guaranteed an Ameraucana mix rather than a Legbar mix--for some reason the tiny mohawk crest on the legbars doesn't really appeal to me, even though I love the rest of their coloring and their eggs look so pretty. I wonder if your Corabeth will turn out to be all black, or something else. So cute! You have a great mix.

Thanks! Ha ha, it's funny how everybody likes different things.

I actually picked the blackest BLRW chick because I am hoping she will be black laced, and not blue.

I just really like the black and red combination. So I hope the grey wing tips don't mean blue lacing. But if they do, then hopefully it will be a very dark grey. In the batch, there were definitely black chipmunk chicks, brown chipmunk chicks and splash chipmunk chicks to choose from, so I am pretty confident (I hope) that she will be black laced, since I chose the black chipmunk kind. I do hope her golden parts come in red later, though.

I think you are right that the legbar crest might look a little funny. But I really like legbars, and I had been really hoping that the Olive eggers in the store would be the legbar crosses, not the Ameraucana crosses.

I would have liked a barred chick. Also, I read somewhere that when you mix an Easter Egger bird with a Marans, then only half of the chicks inherit the blue gene and the other half inherit brown genes from both sides, so it's possible that an Olive Egger from a place like Meyer (who I don't believe has pure Ameraucanas, but actually has Easter Egger "Americanas") might not end up laying green eggs at all. So we will see. Yeah, I hope Corabeth turns out black and pretty, and I hope she lays a pretty egg.

Shaggy is right- too funny!

I hope you are right about Elizabeth. It doesn't surprise me about your White Rock, because I have a barred rock hen, and I have always though her comb was the biggest, out of my other hens, which are Orpingtons and Australorp.

When do we get to see more photos of your babies?

I will take some today, my most recent are from Saturday morning but they've changed a lot in those three days! Next week I will be posting more pics as the big girls will be a year and the little ones a month! But here have a bit of cute:

Welsummer

Aww, they really are cute! I LOVE the Welsummer. Heck, I love them all!

How long do you keep yours in the house? I just moved mine yesterday from the plastic tub brooder in my half bathroom to the larger brooder I have in my garage that is made of wood and wire. When I was taking their photos, I felt like pretty soon it won't be possible to stage them on that ottoman I have been using. I used to put all 6 up there at once, but now they jump around too much, so I just did two at a time.

I found that putting a pile of pine chips on the towel gave them something to peck at, so I could get them to hold still, just a little bit. Otherwise, they were running to the edge to see about jumping off!

Pretty sure Meyer's Blue Ameraucanas (actually BBS) are "pure" they may not be as fine as some breeders but they should generally meet the breed standard. These are what are used in half of their OE breeding program, the other half being the Legbars. They also used to have Wheaten Ameraucanas. But you are right to be wary of most hatchery Ameraucanas, they are usually EEs. Meyer however sells separate Easter Eggers :) That of course is not to say that their Ameraucanas and Legbars always lay blue eggs, sometimes they are more greenish, but so are some from breeders. Tricky blue gene.

I think baby chick wings when they first come in are so fascinating. It makes me wish there were adult chickens who kept wings in those colors and patterns. I know my adult Welsummer has pattern to her wings, but it is spread out more, and not the same stripey look that your baby has now.

And I think a RIR must lose the bars, don't they? I always thought of them as a solid color bird, not patterned. Guess I will learn. ;)

ETA: And the wing pattern on the light brahma looks so cool against the grey body. I think that is just so pretty to look at!

Shrug, I guess I just have a high tolerance for cleaning up poop with paper towels, lol. They have a big brooder we built last year for our first six chicks. I laid down a towel on one of our arm chairs right next to the brooder and it was their favorite hang out, however that was my husbands chair and he moved it this year. I let these girls roam the room for about a half an hour at a time two or three times a day, especially when they get rowdy. They love using me as a jumping platform and snuggle down on my lap when they get tired. I can't wait for it to get in the 60s so they can spend most of the day in the moveable pen and start the slow integration process.

Edited: Opps I thought you asked "How do you keep yours in the house?" Not how long. Well last year we kept them longer because we weren't done with the coop but they spent all day outside in their pen/tractor and we just brought them in at night from about 6 weeks until 3 months old. Hoping to have these girls out of the house by 2 months but that will depend on how the integration goes. Our brooder is also wood, wire and plexi-glass.

:) Agreed. Our EE had very similar chick wings to our Wellie and she still has some pattern (not quite penciling but close) but lost the white specks. Yes RIRs loose the bars, I always forget they have them in the beginning until I see pics of someone's juvenile. Thanks, they look more wild now, it's like someone painted them on in broad strokes of white and black.

Oh, that's right, I forgot you were the one looking for the black BLRW! Sorry! Well, then, I hope she turns out to be black for you! I was reading on the BLRW thread, and I think the very dark grey can turn out to be very dark blue when they grow up, which would be pretty, too.

I agree with autumnhearth--I was under the impression that Meyer uses their "true" ameraucana for the OE mixes, not the easter eggers. I haven't seen a legbar in person, so maybe it wouldn't really bother me, but in the pics I've seen I'm not a big fan of the mohawk (although I like bigger crests a lot--I'm contemplating whether a Sultan might have a place in our flock next year, they're so cool and fluffy looking, although I am worried about predators more with the white chickens...). Whatever Corabeth's mix is, I do hope she lays some pretty eggs for you! Can't wait to see!

My friend and i went in together and ordered 20 assorted rate breeds. I'm so excited they are supposed to arrive April 7th!!! How will i know what i got will they lost the breeds in the box or is it just a shot and wait till they are grown?

That's so exciting! I'm not sure, but I think sometimes they tape a sheet on the bottom of the lid listing the breed of a meal maker. You can always chat with customer service on their website and request they list it on the box, they are very nice and helpful.

So April 1st is a day to be wary about anything you read on the internet, especially entertainment news. I was thinking about how I really have no good pranks to pull. That got me thinking about chicken related pranks and I remembered last fall I actually pulled off a successful one. I was making hard boiled eggs when my husband got off work. I had peeled the shell off of one of Clara's eggs and ran outside as he pulled into the driveway and held it up excitedly knowing he would think it was Victoria's first off-white Dorking egg. He fell for it until I handed it to him and it wasn't hard. Have any of you pulled a poultry prank?

And because it's a picture thread... I have a really hard time getting pics of the chicks standing still, they are either in motion of snuggled down. So it's hard to get a sense of their size and posture.

Bird in the hand

Tiny comb

The husband says the White Rock reminds him of a chocobo (a bird from Final Fantasy you can ride on), my Welsummer reminds him of a sparrow but he couldn't think what his Brahma looked most like, I suggested an Emu and now he is considering that as a name, sigh. Can you see it?
