Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Autumnhearth, those are neat comparison photos! Tell your husband that the light brahma will not look like an emu after it grows up. Maybe he will decide to name it something else.

That's funny about the hard boiled egg prank. I myself am no good at April Fool's jokes.

I have been enjoying watching my chicks get bigger every day. Now they have some perches to jump on. One perch swings a little, so they keep waking up whoever is trying to sleep on it.

Howehens, congratulations on your upcoming chicks! 20 assorted rare breeds, wow! I can't wait to see what they look like. Last time I raised chicks, they were five all the same. This time it has been fun having them be all different. I hope they tell you which rare breeds you get. I think their site says they will give you at least five different breeds, and more than that if possible. Since I can't have 20 chicks, it will be fun watching what you get.

Hehe, oh he knows and when I referred to her as such jokingly on the phone today he said "no, no we're not calling her that". Actually her changing nature is what has him stumped for a name. He knows she is going to grow up to be a big white with black chicken but he doesn't want to look at a picture of someone else's hen and decide on a name based on that. He is thinking something that means warrior.

I think it's great that he has his own chicken and cares what her name will be. How nice to be in the hobby together!

It's nice most of the time. He is the one who found out we could have chickens in the first place, I had just assumed our lot was too small. He can be a bit possessive and originally didn't want me to interact with his first chick, Victoria (whose name he didn't want to tell us for a long time), but he works such long hours it is up to me to bond and socialize the chicks. I've met two sets of parents in my son's Kindergarten class where either the wife or husband wants chickens but he other doesn't. So I'm grateful to be on the same page, even if he limits how many we can have and doesn't like breeds with beards ;)

Quote: Yes, it's definitely something to be thankful for. My husband and I each have hobbies that the other can't stand. I breed parakeets and finches, and have a bird room in our basement for that. He didn't grow up with pets, and can't understand why anyone would want a hobby that requires feeding. His first reaction when he saw me reading a Chicken magazine, was "Oh no- do I have to worry about you getting chickens too now?" Minutes later, he walked by again and said, "Actually, I wouldn't mind if you had outdoor birds. Seriously, he should know better than to say things like that to me. I had them within three days! (But he didn't know that I had already put in an inquiry to a craigslist ad.

Somehow, chickens are more socially acceptable to him than a crazy bird breeding operation in the basement.

We did try having a hobby together once. We went through the Master Gardener program at our local county extension. After two years, he said he just didn't like gardening so we dropped out. I might go back again someday without him, but I'm too busy now, and the whole point was to do it together. But there you go, it's another hobby where you are taking care of something living. And labor intensive. If only I could get excited about inanimate objects!

I know!!! And as I want Faverolles, Ameraucanas, Favaucanas and lots of EE's.... He won't stop me from picking out my own breeds I almost got a Faverolles last year but picked a Marans instead and this year I just really wanted a Wellie. When we get land, he says we can have separate flocks, lol. He wants more Dorkings, Brahmas, Dutch bantams and Eygptian Fayoumi (but that might not work with our climate). But yeah he thinks they are ugly, I think they are adorable. I guess we are "lucky" that Clara is a beardless EE. He also doesn't like speckles, lacing or penciling *shakes head*. Oh and of course he has a beard.

Well, gee, what does he like?!

Apparently grey chickens with no extra feathers on their heads, but extra toes or feathers on their feet is fine. Either petite or really big. He was considering a blue or lavender chicken this time, read: grey, but opted for a Brahma, as we already have a Marans and an Orpington and didn't want a flighty Andalusian. I'm a bit picky too with color combos but have a wider range of interest.

Can I ask what you husband's hobby is? Mine collects action figures.
