Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

Cora, of course!  I have a pair of English budgies named Robert and Cora. ;)   And I didn't even think of that when I named Corabeth.  I got that name from the storekeeper's wife on the Waltons.  Was looking for old fashioned ladies names.

Nice! I think Corabeth is lovely. My sister considered Cora when she was pregnant, she had a boy and has since decided if they do have a second child and its a girl she won't do Cora and gave me her blessing for naming a chicken that.

I wanted a Dutch name for my Welsummer but nothing was striking me. Cornelius is/was popular there, in fact I had a several times great grandfather named Cornelius, plus its the name of the Cornflakes rooster who is said to be based off of a Welsummer. But now I'm worried that Cora sounds to close to Clara (rhyming with are-uh not air-uh) our EE and Cornelia may be to sing songy with Amelia. So still feeling it out. She could be Nellie the Wellie, but I associate Nellie with horses.

I do still have Mabel in the back of my mind, but that's Pipd's Wellie's name. I had a great-aunt Mabel and Maude and they had another brother name Quincy. I always thought those would be great names for a trio of sheep. I also love Hazel with Mabel.

If I ever did a small Downton themed flock it would probably consist mostly of Sussex, Orpingtons and Dorkings. Mrs. Pattmore would be perfect for a Buff Orp. I think Carson would be great for the head roo, maybe a Dorking. Violet would have to be a Lavender Orp. But I actually see the ladies of the house being various colors of Laced Wyandottes, Cora is American after all. Lady Mary would be Silver for sure, Cora Gold, Sibyl blue BLRW and Edith either the splash BLRW or Buff Laced. Yep I've thought about this too much!

Well, of course, you have to sound them out and get a feel for what you like best. I don't think a Cora and a "Clah-ra" would go bad together. But I also think the rhyminess of Cornelia and Amelia is neat, so you can't really go by me, lol.

I think you are going to have to move to a farm, so you can have a horse named Nellie and some sheep.

And lots more chickens!

My great-grandmother's name was Myrtle. You are welcome to use that one, if you want. (I don't think I ever would.) Plus, Myrtle is a nice kind of plant to have in the yard.

I named my Welsummer "Wendolene", from Wallace and Grommit. Was just trying to come up with W ideas, and thought of that one. People seem to like it.

I love your Downton Abby theme! Violet to be a grey chicken, for sure! You know what I think is funny? In the past when I read books, I never thought of British characters as having an accent. It just didn't occur to me, everyone in books speaks the same as me, I guess. But now, whenever I read and the character is an old British woman, her accent and inflections are always exactly like Violets! Or if they are Scottish, I can sometimes make them sound like Mrs. Hughes. And butlers are always Mr. Carson now. It has added to the fun.

Yes we definitely need to buy some acreage, we want a couple goats and my husband wants a pig friend. Wendolene! We <3 Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep! I have a friend with a goat named Myrtle, named after Moaning Myrtle and many of her chickens have Harry Potte themed names. Originally I had thought of naming all the hens after female Hobbits which are flower names after all: Rosie, Daisy, Petunia, Lobelia, Belladonna etc. Then I thought I could sell the husband on Arthurian names as we ha just watched Merlin last year. We have a minor Doctor Who theme with Amelia and Clara. Can you tell we're Anglophiles? Lisa of Fresh Eggs daily had three chicks last spring named Amelia, Ophelia and Cecilia but her Amelia ended up being a roo. I thinks it's cute especially with at least three in the same hatch.

But all this probably belongs in a name thread. Its gorgeous out right now, warmer than forecasted. So I have the chicks, the hens and the boy outside. The chicks are in the pen and the hens are only mildly interested, bugs are more important. But its only the chicks second time out.

Does she have feathers on her legs? All of the black copper Marans that I got from mayors had feathers on the legs. I do have to say I was quite impressed with the dark color of their eggs.
I am so glad you mentioned the dark egg color. That is exactly why I wanted her so badly....and I've been worried that "hatchery" chicks wouldn't grow up to lay those chocolate eggs.

I think she has feathers on her legs...either that or wishful thinking on my part. The Meyer's chicks are smaller than the Easter Eggers (supposedly Ameraucanas but not really) from Ideal that were hatched the same week...I'm hoping that the Meyer's are just slower growing breeds (Cream Legbar and BCM).

Our BCM laid lovely dark brown eggs sometimes with a purple bloom on them. Also our " heritage" breeds grew much slower than our EE and Golden Buff, all from Meyer, those two really had hybrid/mutt vigor and laid first as well.

Yay Avatar theme names! And Mai is very pretty! I think one objection that my husband had to me calling my Welsummer Cora, short for Cornelia is that he is currently into Legend of Korra, whereas my association is Downton Abbey. His little Brahma chick actually reminds me of one of the water tribe peoples, with their fur lined coat hoods.
You caught us! My boys loved the series and since we were getting one of each breed (or so we originally planned) we were going to name the BCM after Fire Nation ladies, the CL after Air Nomads, Easter Eggers for the Earth Kingdom gals, and Ameraucanas for the Water Tribes. But Ideal's Ameraucanas don't really look like Aeraucanas...so we ended up with 4 Easter Eggers named for earth benders. I will see about buying an Ameraucana or two later this year or next so that we can finish the theme (as if we needed an excuse to get more chicks

Nice! So what are the other names you chose? I saw Jinora, Mai and Toph.

I almost snorted my coffee through my nose on that one! I love the Downton Abbey theme! But some ladies would have to be cochins, don't you think?

Cochins would be appropriate. They aren't very high on my list because of low egg production but I do think they are fabulous looking and would be great for brooding chicks. Any suggestions on which characters? I think Lady Rose would be lovely as a Light Sussex. I think I'm going to have to make a collage now.

We have an Oma (she's the densest one of the group--I would be surprised if she's still alive after a year especially if she doesn't figure out that some of the dogs think she's a chew toy). The other Easter Eggers are Beifong sisters, Suyin and Lin (my youngest typically names pets either Princess or Ashley...which is why we have a Rottie named Princess and used to have a Rooster named Princess, plus a fish named Ashley...so in deference to him, we call her Ashley Lin).

If those three had been Ameraucanas as planned, then they would have been named for Katara, Korra, and Kya. But their legs are green and not slate gray and only one has the puffy cheeks. So we'll wait until we have true Ameraucanas.

We had purchased a white crested black Polish chick which did not make it...we were going to name Polish chicks after the Kyoshi warriors!

Ah, we have silkies so we're more into chickens as pets that sometimes give us eggs.

I may have to rewatch some episodes of Downton Abbey to come up with a list of characters matched to chickens...what FUN!

Here's a Silver Spangled Hamburg chick the day she came from
Meyer Hatchery. Very healthy and extremely friendly! We haven't
lost a single chicken or duck from them.

These are a few of our adult chickens, all from Meyer Hatchery.
In general, the chickens we have gotten from them are more personable than
the ones from our local farm store, Rural King.
