Meyer Hatchery Chicken pics anyone??

@hyzenthlay I think it is safe to say that if the comb is getting pink at 2 weeks, you may be right about her being a "Henry". Fingers crossed that it isn't true! Great idea about using the HC around the puppy pens! I"m sure it's good for them to get outside during the day. Do you have photos of your coop reno or a thread going?

Yeah, I'm feeling pessimistic about our little Wellie turning out to be a girl at this point--but maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised....

I don't have a thread or anything going on the coop reno, but I added a few pics below. We are doubling the size of it, and it is a big job. These pics show the addition mostly framed out, and the shingles ripped off of the original coop in order to blend it together with the addition. Should be pretty nice when we finish, whenever that might be, although it's a mess of construction right now. Darn work and and kids needing dinner and stuff gets in the way of the hobbies.









This last pic isn't the best, but you can see Tiger Lily standing by the cutout leading from the old run to the addition.

We have 2 of each auracana, barred rock, silver laced Wyandotte and golden laced Wyandotte from rural king which we got May 1st. I just ordered 2 of each Easter eggers, blue laced red Wyandotte, black copper maran and welsummer. I go back and forth on whether I want a rooster or two. We have almost 2 acres, but we need to fence in a few spots to keep them safe from neighbors dogs. Last night was the first night I let them out in the run and didn't have to chase them back to the coop to lock them up!

My mother in law likes their GLW rooster, he is very handsome and good with the ladies. As far as temperment I hear Brahmas and Faverolles are some of the nicest. But I too would be tempted to get a roo with a blue egg gene.

Edited to add. I would just get one rooster to start. Don't need any possible fighting or for the hens to get over-mated. Says the woman who has never had a rooster

Your coop is beautiful, what a great job you did on the original part! It is going to be really nice after you make it bigger.

I know what you mean about cooking- I hate to stop and cook when I'm in the middle of a big project.

Did you get your order today, or going tomorrow? If you are there around 3:30 they put the late hatchers and over runs out for $2.

They also had a lot of BBB turkeys today.

I had to get a couple more waterers. Of course, it corresponded to today's late hatchers. Today they had enough over runs that when I asked for a box to hold 50 chicks, they had a list of availability. It was not guaranteed, but they told me to check off what I would be interested in, and how many of each. Most were substituted, some I got more than indicated, some were just short of how many I was hoping to get.

They told me they rarely offer the list. Note I said they offer it to the customer. The customer is not expected to ask for it. Their VERY STRICT rule to identify no chicks that were not ℗ repurchased is very much in effect. Even with listed chicks. They TRY to get what is listed, but don't separate or identify what is there.

They did substitute a breed I asked not to get, when I explained to a rep what happened, she removed those of the unwanted breed and let me replace them with others from the bin. I was not shown the removed chicks.

How can you not like a hatchery that's goes to these lengths to give excellent customer service?
Don't get me wrong, not all chicks will make it. They don't always all make it under a broody either. I don't expect it. Even when I have incubated and hatched my own, they did not all make it. Meyers is neck and neck with my incubated chicks for survival rate. Prolly under, considering 2 chicks died of unnatural causes...
We have banned my 8 year old from handling chicks in the brooder...

Just as an aside, I also have 10 chicks from another hatchery. All 10 are 3 weeks old and doing very well. 8 EE's, 1 RIR, 1 RSL.

My pick up is the 20th/21st. I'm not sure if that means I can show up either day?!?!

Thanks! We're pretty happy with the coop. I designed it based mostly on stuff I learned here, and my husband, dad, and I built it. When we built the original part, we lived on a tiny city lot, and it was right up against the property line on the left side, so we wanted to make that side low (about the same height as the fence) so it wouldn't look too overwhelming to the neighbors, but we wanted to make the rest of it tall enough to walk into, and have two stories so that it maximized the amount of run space we had. When we moved to our new house with a much bigger yard, we couldn't bear to leave it behind, so we put it on the back of our pick-up truck and moved it! Now it has lots of room, tucked in behind our garage and next to the preexisting shed. I am excited to get it done, then put some finishing touches on it and landscape around it a bit. But yes, life gets in the way....

Yes, they are ready to go on Monday, and I have been told that you can pick up your chicks on either Monday or Tuesday. I have always gone on the Monday, though, because I can't bear to wait an extra day!

I also go on Monday. All orders are packed Monday mornings, and if you pick up on Tuesday, your babies had to stay in their box that whole time. I now have to go back next week. I have to get my youngest child her very own chick to raise. She gets her choice of ANY breed available...

I am excited to get it done, then put some finishing touches on it and landscape around it a bit.

One thing about this forum, it can be really inspiring to people to get out and do a building project. After I discovered chickens and chicken coops and BYC, then I discovered garden sheds (think Google image search and Pinterest), and now I am motivated to make a shed in my yard that can serve as both garden shed and chicken coop, and my dream is to put finishing touches and landscaping around it. It's not so much about the chickens any more, although I'm sure it will make them very happy....

I was thinking the same thing. The reason to do pick up would be to save the chicks from two days in their box in the hands of the postal service, so getting them Monday if at all possible seems best for the chicks.
