Meyer Hatchery questions

The 2 things that I am most worried about is how they will look as far as body type and correctness...obviously they will not be show or breeder quality but if I am going to pay the price of the chicks and for shipping and grow them up I want them to look at least decent. and the 2nd thing I am worried about is production...I dont want them to start laying too early because that can cause tons of issues later but when they do start laying I want them to lay like Meyer says they do which is about 5 eggs per week per hen for the breeds I am getting.

My three girls are now 24 weeks old and Roxy, my Columbian Wyandotte, just started laying the day after Thanksgiving. The other two (barred rock and Black Australorp) haven't laid yet but are showing all the signs. So, it doesn't seem like they started too early (though it is fall..so maybe delayed due to shorter days?). So far, since starting last week, Roxy has produced an egg every other day. The first few have been small eggs, but I'm told that they'll get bigger.

I doubt my girls are show quality but they seem healthy, have shiny plumage...and their personalities are all pretty cute.

PS The pictures that Meyer has online seem pretty close to what mine look like...so maybe judge from those?

Hope that helps.

I ordered 60 Buff Orpingtons from Meyer 3 years ago and just retired the flock this year. I had a problem with shipping, it took 4 days for them to get here because of an error on the Post Offices part, but Meyer gave me a credit for the ones I lost. Mine were wonderful layers, great dispositioned, and laid well for several years. I don't think you will be disappointed in Meyer Hatchery.

We've only ordered meat birds from Meyer for the first time this fall. The first shipment took 6 days to reach us and they were all dead by then. The second order (which they replaced ... they also offered us our money back) took 4 days and we lost a few birds in that order too but the rest seem to be growing very well so far. We won't order from them again because we get better shipping from McMurray but in fairness McMurray is closer to us and therefore it shouldn't take as long for shipment. We were wanting to get some ducks from them to replace ones we lost to a opossum but that's a lot of money to spend for the chance they won't reach us alive. Sigh.
