Good morning All,

I am looking to add some white egg layers to my flock. From what I hear the Leghorn is the way to go. I have come across Meyer's site which sells 17 week old pullets. I thought this would be the way to go because I wouldn't need to keep them indoors like day old ones.

However, it was just brought to my attention that their beaks would be clipped? I really don't like the thought of this. Has anyone gotten 17 week old pullets from Meyer's? How much are they clipping? Am i better off trying to find them elsewhere?

I live in MA, tried to do a search on local breeders. Anyone know of Leghorn breeders in or near Massachusetts?

Lastly, I know Leghorns can have a more flighty temperament. Will they be ok adding to these breeds? I have 3 RIR, 3 Golden Reds, 3 Buff Orps. 2 Americauna / EE and 2 Wheaton Marans.

Thanks in advance.

Most hatcheries do clip their beaks. Sorry!

You would find some around your area in a given time. Someone in here would speak up I am sure!

good thing you know this! however.. you really need to know that they are quite possibly the most ridiculous chickens EVER. they have a lot of personality and one of mine is a favorite... but wow. they flapping and the screaming and the bokking... golly. i have a mixed flock and they are fine with everyone else. they will become the center of your - and everyone else's - attention.

but just so you know, my hubby nearly had a breakdown when 'henny' was in the garage, pooping on EVERYTHING, and screaming.. and ended up on his motorcycle seat. of course she pooped right on it.

i laughed. he didnt. we chased her out and she was back in the garage about 5 mins later.

they lay like the dickens... but they are just plain silly.

i have leghorns from ideal ive had them since three days old and they are the sweetest things i chose not to get their beeks dubed cause i think its torture and if you get them at 17 weeks old yes they are about to start laying but if you get them as babies you raise them and the temperment is gone they will fly to your shoulder they will sit on your knee and talk to you i love em i havent gotten an egg from any of them yet they are 24 weeks today and when i do get it its going to special good luck with your choice

thanks for the advice so far....Hopefully I will get a few more responses, maybe with someone in my area that breeds

ideal allows anything as long as your order equals 25 dollars it doesnt have to be 25 dollars worth of chicks but like a t shirt and chicks or what ever you want but i think mypet chicken does this as well

I just received an email from Mcmurray saying they have 6 weeks old Brown sex link for 8.75 not debeaked.

They are vaccinated against 4 or 5 different diseases. If you want Leghorn you won't find any 17 weeks old pullet that haven't been debeaked.

This is to avoid pecking at each others and the eggs.
