Michael coughs and spits out seed

My Australorpe rooster Michael really enjoys this backyard party mix that I buy at Tractor Supply. Sometimes he coughs out seed that has stuck in this throat. He is eight pounds now and I’m wondering if I should change the feed. I will be raising the food bowl and water up so he doesn’t have to reach down so far.
What do you feed your rooster? He gets plenty of grit and greens from the yard as I have planted a nice variety of things out there and the natural plants. He is spoiled rotten but he’s my bird!!( House rooster)
I also would like to know that best place to register him as an emotional support animal.
i am prone to on occasion just run out of physical and mental energy with no real warning. The other afternoon this happened to me and I had to rest. the front door was open. I asked Michael to please look over me while I slept and when I awoke he was on my shoulder watching everything like a sentinel. I cannot express enough the strength this wonderful bird has given me.

Can you post a picture of the package, or a link to the product? It's not one I'm familiar with.

Chickens can usually eat from ground level without trouble, so that seems odd to me.

I've never had just a single rooster, but I would expect any complete chicken food would work well, except "layer" foods, because they have too much calcium--he is not trying to produce egg shells So something like chick starter or a grower feed or an all-flock feed.

Grit and greens are good too--I'm glad to see he's getting those

You are not doing him any favors by not feeding him a balanced.
You're actually doing harm... Which is most likely going to cause his life to be shortened.


Stop feeding him so many treats and buy a complete balanced chicken feed for him.

I would be feeding him an all flock feed as his primary diet.
A chicken should only be getting MAYBE 2 Tablespoons of treat a day.

That bag is a bag of treats.

Feeding him a balanced feed like all flock will greatly reduce the risk of him dying from fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome. It will also help him live a long happy life.

That food is meant as a treat--you see it says "Entertaining Treat for Backyard Flocks." It does not have the right mix of nutrients to be the main food for a chicken.

I suggest you buy a bag of feed that has one of these labels:
--chick starter (non-medicated)
--chick starter/grower (non-medicated)
--flock raiser
--all flock

It should have either pellets or little crumbled bits, and all of the feed in the bag will be one color. Not a colorful mixture of seeds or grains.

That food should be the main thing your rooster eats. He can have as much as he wants of it, and of water, and of grit, and of grass and green plants.

Anything else is considered a "treat," and he should only get a small amount each day.
