My name is Michelle from Las Vegas. I want to share my experience and what I have done that has worked. Yes....this may look creepy but it keeps coyote away. We have also noticed a decline in solicitors at our door (just kidding).
I got my first flock of 6 hens last August so Im into this by about a year now. I have added 1, and lost one to a coyote... leaving me at 6 today. Barred Rock, Silver Leghorn, Buff Orpington, Black Austrolorp, White Silkie, Americauna. The loves of my life.
I have put thousands into their comfort. They have 1/8 of an acre where they enjoy free ranging during the day that is half grass, 1/4 desert, and 1/4 mixed vegetation. They have plenty of shade and water and misting systems keep them cool in the Nevada heat. I do everything humanly possible to attend to their every need. However, the coyote attach was the most horrible day of my life as a chicken mom. It happened right under my nose and was a painful wake up call to say the least as they got my prized hen. The sweetest, Buff Brahma lap-dog-bird a chicken mom could ever hope for. They also tore into my barred rock but her wounds all healed. That one coyote stressed by girls out so bad they were neurotic for a month, which made them susceptible to eye infections, etc. It was a mess.
I wanted to share with you what I did that has kept the coyotes at bay. I hope Ill never have to worry about it again. As creepy as it may look, rest assured there are 5 undeveloped desert acres behind our wall so no neighbor has to see this from their morning patio.
We call them our "Scare Barbies". They line our back wall every 15 feet. They are each made up a little different and I even switch them around every few weeks. I bought them off amazon in sets of 3 by searching for mannequin heads. These are the dolls that hair dressers practice on. A set of 3 cost $89 with free shipping. So far the only coyotes we have seen (through binoculars) stand at the street at the end of the 5 acre lot and look our way. None has dared come any closer. We know it isnt fool proof but we cant raise our wall due to permit limits, and electric fencing is illegal here. Just thought Id share incase you wanted either a resource to try....or just a good laugh.
