Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey everyone, just curious who's planning to attend the MBGBA swap in Imlay City this Saturday and what you are bringing if you're selling. I'm going, but won't be selling anything. However, I'm looking for a couple of things: heritage breed turkeys (juveniles, poults and/or hatching eggs), breeding age rex rabbit buck(s), wyandottes in any color other than gold or silver laced. so if you are planning to bring any of those to the swap please let me know.

I plan on going, but won't be bringing anything you are looking for. Will have an older pair of sebastopol geese, some call ducks, laying chicks, seramas, older pullets, and maybe my dewlap toulouse geese.

Some pictures on this rainy day.

This is Perry the blue silkie X and Sheldon the Olandsk.

Sheldon and Gunther. Gunther is also a Silkie X of the Silkies have perfect feet but non silkied feathers.

The chicks.

The moms Moppit and Cotton. They share their duties with no fights.

Little cochins. I'm a bit concerned the one has not feathered out. It is the same age just a different color. It is also a frizzle.

I'm not minding the rain today but the damp is making the day seem cold.

Welcome to those who are new. I love to see the chicken coops and tractors. It gives me ideas. I have a small coop I want to build for my little girls. The snow is finally gone but now I have to wait for a dry day.

So does the on your face/ bird flu thing include hugging chickens? Cause if it does i'm hit. I still want a house girl, I figure i'm just as likely to get the flu from wild birds, anyway. Couldn't NOT hug on my birds, if you try to ignore them you end up with a BIG bird on your shoulder! :p Or tugging on your pantleg, shoelace, etc.....

Glad, How many meaties will that accommodate and will you show us the finished product? I have always seen Chicken tractors as having a small run attached to it. Will you be doing the same?

So a separate coop for the turkey's ? I was thinking just the other side of the building I was going to build... Not good enough huh? How far do turkeys need to be away from Chickens in order to be safe?

Welcome

you have come to a good place to learn, Do come to chicken stock if you can, lots of fun, pot luck picnic
I have to echo, build big,,,, first you see one breed, that is a must have, then another, then another, blue eggs, green eggs, dark brown, light brown, white, fancy, not so fancy, duel purpose, ect...... tractors can have a chicken wire bottom so chickens can eat with out scratching up the ground, moved daily it doesn't kill the grass so fast.
LOVE the A frame, looks light enough to move around

I would NEVER put a duck on my face.

( I am picturing a chicken paste all over the face)
yes I meant hugging. kissing chickens. and yes we all do that especially with baby chicks. However some of those in China that have gotten the flew actually LIVE on a dirt floor in a hut with their ducks, the big problem is manure.

love the chick pics,

Raz thanks for the butterfly lesson, we have a lot up here, with a lot of old hand me down plants, did not know how many of them are food for butterflies, also didn't know what the hummingbird pupa looked like, chickens have been eating them

RaZ, that's pretty cool.

Laura, my old JRT is 17.

When she passes I doubt if I will get a replacement. Almost any breed I can think of will probably outlive me and seen too many instances of older dogs not being wanted by anyone when the owner dies.
Opa, yes he is up there in age. Good thing he is not in pain. We had a big dog that lived till he was 15.
Hi everyone! A little about me..I have a wicked sense of humor (but don't most Michiganders?) I am new to the forum but old in years (53), we (my husband and I) live in the 'Burbs of Detroit or to be even a little more Michigan we live in the Downriver area:). We will be retiring to Grayling next spring. That is when fowl things will happen in my backyard. I like to plan things in advance so here I am a year before we get chickens doing my research! Everyone else thinks I am crazy to start now but my Husband knows better. I will be building a chicken coop this summer and so far my plans have changed dramatically from day one.
What I knew was that I wanted Chickens for eggs. Then I wanted Chickens for meat and see if I could get lucky enough to have Chickens for hackle (fly tying). Oh..and lets not forget Turkeys, and maybe a few guineas tossed in to roam around the place. So I went from a small coop to house 6 chickens to maybe a central building to house all the birds sectioned off inside as coops. Yeah I know.. I'm CRAZY right? So here I am throwing myself at the mercy of this forum begging for some help:) If you ever wanted a clean slate to teach someone something then here I am!
Thanks for reading all this...
Tina
Hi Tina, welcome to BYC! No, you aren't crazy at all. There are plenty of folks here that will be happy to help you get addicted

I thought you might want to see what my coop & run looks like. It was very easy to do and I would recommend a hoop house to anyone that wants a covered run in Michigan.
