Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We just spent the weekend up in Irons at the "Flea Roast & Ox Market". We stayed at my uncles cabin, and hung out at the fair all Saturday. Shopped the flea market, ate "flea burgers" and some good carny onion rings. We got the kids got wrist bands so they could ride all the carny rides until they dropped. We came home with a bunch of crap from the flea market that we "didn't know we needed until we saw it". Kind of like Wal-Mart. Got some pretty neat sprinklers for the garden, new collars for the goats, and a few things for the camper too. We also stopped at the Dublin Store and got some rather expensive but very worth it homemade jerky. Otherwise we just hung around the cabin in the woods, visited with my uncle and our friends that came with us, hiked a trail around the woods, watched the deer, or played dice. It was SO PEACEFUL and a much needed "get-away". Thanks to my momma for farm-sitting while we were gone. All the animals looked just fine when we got back... like we knew they would.

Though a couple of our meatie chicks look like they got a tad sunburned. Poor kids. I'll be putting a tarp over their run area later today so they'll have more shade.

Happy Monday!

for all that i spent several hours out in my garden this weekend, it still looks like a weed patch compared to those people have posted here. among the lambs quarter, crab grass and amaranth i found that six of the tomatoes i direct seeded had actually sprouted, though none of the peppers appear to have. and i do actually have some carrots out there. i bought some tomatoes and peppers and got them in the ground finally. hopefully they will produce something. a deer seems to have gotten into my garden and eaten one row of cucs and one of beans (only 3 cucs and 2 beans, but still) and didn't touch the rest. got to get my dog to care more about deer than the chickens. still have to keep her in the house or on the tether when they are out. didn't get any rain for about three days, so yesterday i turn on the sprinkler. 10 minutes later it starts pouring rain. go figure.

last week i moved my chicks (4 wks) into an enclosure in the coop, and one of the little white ones has decided she's big enough to roost with the hens. not sure where she's getting out of the enclosure at, but twice now i go out to close up the coop for the night and she is sitting right up with the hens. they haven't decided to care yet, fortunately, but i put her back in with the other chicks and she seems to stay there for the night after that. silly little girl.

it is hard to get myself to clean the house when the weather is actually nice and there is so much to do out side. but i really need to. i got some done yesterday during the rain, but there is always more to do.

Sounds great! I wanna go!

I have Mike's ruling from 21st District Court available as a PDF file. If you are interested in the ramblings of the judge, send me a PM.

I can't get on BYC from my computer, but I can from my phone. Weird.
Came back from camping to find seven broodies!
My garden looks horrible. Peppers haven't grown at all. Had bad storm while we were gone and my plants look beaten down. Looks like well be going to the farmers market this summer.
Have a great day

I think I have a problem...no I know I do...

I lost a hen last night. I brought her in yesterday cleaned her up checked her over to see if I could figure out what the issue was...and she ended up dying over night. She was an old hen. 5-6 yrs old maybe... so maybe age and immune system played a role. She was very lethargic, fluffed up and drinking water (laying next to the water-er). I picked her up and she belched out a ton of water. I thought..maybe sour crop, I was a tad squishy, but I felt gravel and it seemed kinda empty for being end of the day. I gave her some olive oil and massaged her crop, but couldnt' get anything out of it.

But, she also had a poopy back end... not super wet.. could it have been vent gleet or just diarrhea? I have not seen blood in the poops, but I have two more hens (also older) that are showing the same symptoms..And I've seen some super watery poops lately. Is gleet contagious among hens? They all share the same box.

I think this rain is just making too perfect of an environment for all sorts of issues.

Anyone have any suggestions? I was going to start with covid and treat for Coccidia first since I had that issue with chicks this year already. Then give a probiotic then move on to worming and then more probiotics.. Sterilize everything that I can.. I've already cleaned the coops. I clean them every weekend... is that enough? I'll check the crops on the other hens tonight. Anyone treat sour crop? My thought is they could have eaten some food that got wet since I toss out some scratch for them. I try to toss in the grass, but with this rain... idk..... but if anyone has any thoughts I'd be grateful for the help.

It only seems to be affecting the older faverolle hens.. so I'm suspecting it's their run and cocci first. I'll isolate the sick hens, and let the others out into a different area.. I will treat ALL the birds I have. with the corid.

I've been on line searching for everything today....... (work is going to wonder why there are so many inquiries for chicken poop! LOL!) Unless you guys can think of something else.

I am doing the farm market cuz I was so disappointed by the produce thieves last year...

Hey Silly, how are the birds doing?

The birds I got from you are doing fine. Not caring for confinement right now but I don't dare let them lose yet with the recent developments at my place. (see my other post).
