What a gorgeous roo! I saw another pretty EE roo today at the local Elevator. So I had to stop and chat (of course, lol). The people had just bought them from a person in Flint advertising on CL ($5 each - buy five hens get a free rooster). She said that they had muffs and beards and a funny sounding name, lol. I asked if the lady told her they were Ameraucanas. She lit up and said yes. She said the place they came from was in a very bad area and that it was a pit but the birds all looked okay. The picture I saw posted on CL showed a lot of chickens in a stall/pen type area so I hope she quarantines them if she has other chickens . . .

Hmmmm. I will have to read up on the growing your own fodder thing.

Precious Kitty and fuzzybutt love, :) Here are the pictures, I also posted them in the breed/gender forum. These pics taken yesterday and they are about 16 weeks old. Below are the four EE's we have, starting from top: white/beige is "Peep" second is the one we think is a roo...."Twotone" Roo? very beautiful bird and very timid! third is Hawkie....the brown one, hen and the chased one by three of the reds (head "Red" Lizzy is indifferent to Hawkie) fourth is "Bratty" because she started picking on the other three as chicks, now she is more subdued. Three more of "Twotone" Here is a close up of Hawkie, who seems to be the most timid and chased out of the group. She sits alone somewhere hidden most of the time out of the coop. In the coop she seems to be ok though...thats where the food and water is. Now for the production "Reds": they are one week older than the EE's.. background is "Little Wing" on left is "Peckie" and the right is "Diggie" Forefront is the lead hen "Lizzie" with Little Wing ...Hens, right?
TwoTone is GORGEOUS!

Over the years I had hens that have laid exceptionally large eggs and all have had double yolks. The other day Hope cracked an egg that while it scaled "jumbo" it wasn't exceptional large and we had several as large or larger. What made this egg unusual was the fact that it contained 3 yolks. First time I have ever encountered an egg so blessed.

Anyone wanting Welsummer cockerels should contact me immediately. I have several nice ones but more than I need. Unless someone needs them I will be culling them by the end of the week.

Ok I just read through the whole growing fodder thread got super motivated and got everything I need to grow my own fodder. Except the barley! I can't find it at a reasonable price anywhere. I am in brach county Michigan and we are new to the area so I am at a loss over here. Does anyone grow fodder here in michigan that would like to disclose their source for barley or wheat?

I have just started growing barley fodder for my goat and cow to feed during milking. Right now I am only feeding to my goat as she is in milk, but my cow will give birth any time now, so will give her fodder when I am milking her. But last week I lost my favorite sow, orphaning 6 of the 5 week old piglets, so I have been giving them fodder too. I got seed grade from the local feed mill, but they can order the kind and amount I need. Maybe you can ask your local mill if they can order one for you.

My girlfriend milking the goat for the first time, she got excited when she squirted some milk out. I am milking the goat outside until I get my milking shed built.

I got my barley at our local feed mill in Napoleon for 22$ a 50 # bag (organic feed seed). Be careful getting seed grade as it could have a pesticide treatment on it, just ask when you find it.

Be fore warned the water will take on a nasty sour smell - I did it in my house for a while... You have to change the drain water out every day. In the summer, I would do it out in a shed if you can or set it up so the catch pan will drain...

Don't need a lot of light for barley which is a plus. Also get heavy duty trays for sprouting... they will get heavy!
