Candy,
That's a good question, I have wondered the same thing, but have been assuming for the worms, one would treat only as needed.
Like you, I like to stay with as natural of remedies as possible, so don't want to medicate unless needed
I have often wondered what different droppings "mean". As a newbie I tend to worry any time something doesn't look normal. I just didn't realize how many "normals" there were. When In doubt I reference the below link. I know I have seen a similar one somewhere here on BYC.

I really need to thank everyone on this thread...I cannot tell you how much I have learned from you all AND how much fun y'all are!![]()
That's actually a really great poo reference. Gross, but great. Thanks for sharing!
You need to do a fecal exam to be sure. A microscope or dissecting scope is great. Some hand lenses are strong enough if you have good eyes. (I prefer a covered slide).Ok, newb question! How can you tell if your chickens have worms? and do you worm them as a matter of principle or wait until there are symptoms? Also the same question about mites/lice, do you wait until symptoms or dust during the bad season?
So far, my chickens seem to be fine, I don't dissect their poo and do not see any obvious worms in there....but still! Want to make sure I am on top of taking care of my birds
RaZ, good to remind us to have that fire extinguisher. I understand that everyone is being helpful and not vet's. Actually, I prefer "home remedies" and natural intervention as much as possible.

Yeah, it is kinda gross, but i found it pretty informative, too
If I recall, the post that I got it from had a disclaimer/warning like "graphic: not for the squeamish, gross, etc. " before the link.
Hmmm, guess I forgot the warning![]()
Both are beautiful!
AwwwI cut, split and stacked a bunch of wood today. A couple of stumps were loaded with ants, larvae and other tasty bugs that I know my chickens would have loved to snack on. Sure do miss those chickens!![]()
