Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Yup. There are all kinds of "those people". Backwater hicks with chickens who can barely read or write. All those rednecks in Austin, TX; Madison, WI; Salem, OR; Tacoma and Seattle, WA; Ann Arbor, MI; MYC, NY; and scores of other cities across the nation.

I had a new visitor today, "he" came and ate all the frogs but left the goldfish.

Hummmm, what's on the menu?

Here he is diving in to grab a frog...

Can you see the frog?

Now for a close up..

Beautiful indeed. I want to know- how did you get him to pose like that?!

My pic is not nearly as nice, but I found the subject matter cool. While I was away, I saw this nest near Garden, MI (Upper Peninsula) I thought I saw 3 huge babies in that nest. I showed this pic to a US Forestry Ranger, and she identified it as an Osprey. ...Which I don't think I've ever seen before.

We are still trying to get the City of Perry to allow us to keep a small flock of therapy chickens for my disabled children. We have sent a letter requesting accommodations under the Americans with Disability Act and the city has ignored our request. We have been on the news several times now and have over 9,000 signatures in support. This Tuesday Aug 6th at 7pm there is a city council meeting and I am inviting anyone who can come to please show your support. I have been told anyone can speak at the meeting but people who reside in Perry will be “heard” better by the council. There is power in numbers and filling that council room with supporter, even those who say nothing will send a powerful message to the city council that we will be heard. We have a right to keep therapy chickens under both the American with disabilities act and the right to farm act. And although they may have scared our neighbors out of town, we will be staying and so will our chickens.

Hello,

We are currently working on getting the animal ordinance in the City of Davison changed to allow back yard chickens. We have worked with them on drafting a revision and there will be a public hearing on September 9th at Davison City Hall during the regular City Council Meeting. Anyone who is willing and able to come support the cause is encouraged to. Information about the meeting time and location is available on the City of Davison website www.cityofdavison.org. Your support will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi everyone! I'm sorry to hear of all the losses! Both deceased chickens, and personal rights (not being able to own their chickens)
The pictures people have posted are beautiful!
I try to keep up on the Michigan thread, but often by the time I read up I'm already a few pages behind.
I am going to TRY to start attending at least a couple court cases and meetings relating to farming. Life is busy, but I will do my best!

DavChickFam. I'm in Davison, Twp. I'll try and make the meeting.

Good Morning! It's a beautiful one.

Laura, fantastic pics!! So cool.

Sitting for my four beautiful grand girls today. It's going to be a busy day!

I get this attitude too, and though i'm a hick by association i didn't start out this way; i actually decided that i prefer the un-stuck up crowd better :D And it's more fun than being conventional anyway. It's funny though how quick people assume because i have chickens i must somehow have a lesser IQ, when in reality i can out read the average joe (hey, i had a lot of spare time as a kid) LOL Funny thing is that if you can read, you know your rights. Which we have. I think the whole thing is the govt. being embarrassed by their assumptions about us being easily fooled being wrong, and they don't want to back down because it's essentially an admission of wrongness; so they are going to fight it to the bitter end. Not about chickens really at all.
Maybe we should make up a list of all the fancy movie stars that have chickens. Will that change their minds that we're all just hicks and should go back to our backwoods homes and raise our "farm" animals there.
