Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My property title actually has a section that reads

"This parcel may be located within the vicinity of farmland or a farm operation. Generally accepted agricultural and management practices which may generate noise, dust, odors and other associated conditions may be used and are protected by the Michigan right to farm act."

I wonder if there is a way to check the titles on parcels belonging to neighbors that move to the country and suddenly decide they don't want to be by a farm to see if they have something like this in them?

That it is intended to be a warning to "city" people moving out to the country that they are buying near farm property and need to be aware. that what goes on there, is protected from nuisance suites and the farm doesn't have to change to suite the "city" person. I use city loosely... but it doesn't mean that the land they're getting is farmable..... though I disagree, it all should be if the need or desire is there as long as it is within reason.

I just googled Jackson county zoning map for my township, so that should be accessible to anyone in their area.

I also like the Jackson Co GIS site: you can get ownership info, lot sizes, real estate values etc...

I got stung by one yesterday... hand is all sore and itchy today.

I got stung on top of the foot today when I was throwing something away in the garbage by the garage. It got into my crocs and stung me. I managed to shake it off before it got a good sting, so it only poked me. Still hurt like crazy though! Last year I got stung in the back of the hand and got an allergic reaction. Not fun. It doesn't help that the window shutters on our garage are swarming with wasps.

I am not going back outside today.
All these bee sting stories....
And there is a bees nest right by my coop & the tub where I keep the food/treats.

At 47....I have never bee stung by a bee. Would really stink if I did today (since it seems to be "going around") & find out I'm allergic, since no humans around. Hope the dog, cats or chickens would be able to dial 911 :D

This is happening in my hometown in Monroe Co., MI. I don't want to open a debate so be nice. I'm trying to be impartial but as a chicken and sheep owner who fears dog attacks every single day... it's tough. But I will say that it really bothers me that the dogs' owners and others are so desperate that they're making up stories about what must have happened and even vilifying the farmer for wanting compensation for the incident (Not sure if the amount the farmer has asked for is legit since I can't trust much of what is being said by the dog owners in their desperation). All I know for sure is that if they were my dogs and this had happened to me, I would do the responsible thing and have them put down. I don't like the way the owners are being so shifty about it. They are trying to say that coyotes did it and it's entirely coincidence that the same day, these two dogs got out and they just happened to be caught in the same pen with the slaughtered pigs. Photo evidence and everything. *sigh* It's just a mess.

I don't know... I just watched the vid... there wasn't much blood on the dog in the corner, but I do think that they could have done it. Why? I remember growing up, we had sheep. My glass mole step dad had these two dogs, together the dogs weighed about 90 pounds. The dogs got in the sheep pen, killed off a bunch of sheep, just two dogs. They didn't want to eat the sheep, they were just having fun, and no there was hardly any blood on the dogs, but a mess of the sheep. I also remember on a pig farm, same glass mole step dad had sheppard mix mutts. And they killed some of the farmers pigs. Big 300 pound hogs. No marks on the dogs from pigs fighting back. So, I would be saying, don't try and say that the dogs couldn't have done this, they could have. They very well could have.

Now the farmer is being made the villain for not backing down and taking the pay off. I'd want the restitution. I might even be "kind" and let the dogs go back home, being it was a first occurrence. But knowing that the family has dogs who can get out, and the yard is not secure, I'd want it made sure that the dogs were properly secured to their yards. But then again, I may not be kind.

If my dog was to have attacked the neighbors chickens, before I got chickens, I would have paid for the chickens, and if they wanted, euthanized the dog. Heck, I put my beloved Babi to sleep because of his breed, even though the other persons dog started the fight, had no injuries, no torn skin, just got a good "hey are you stupid shake". BUT knowing this, the authorities could have socked it to me good, made me a felon were my dog to bite another animal again. I believe that once a dog kills, the dog will kill again. I have seen it first hand. Several times as a child, and several times with Rotten Ruby and Argus and my chickens. I feel bad for the family, I feel bad for the farmer. I feel worse for the farmer actually, because they are being trashed on left and right.

The dog owner even has a petition up to save their dogs on facebook....

Ive went through this earlier this year. When i was accused that my dogs ran 2 miles and killed a X amount of ducks. Now mind when this happened it was the first time my dogs have ever gotten out and they got out the front door because my son whos 20 months let thwm out. Also the time that it had happened we were all sleeping. Even with all of my evidence i was still ordered to pay the reaitution .... $2,000 for some ducks that cost $3-10 each.

It's why people need to keep their dogs where they belong... Unfortunetly this sort of thing will happen again and again. As long as owners are aware of the consequences of something like this, and aren't all surprised... I have been looking into one of those collars that has a signal from a port in the house, instead of the buried fence. That way, if the dogs get out the front door from the 4 yr old... There isn't only my chickens to worry on, but the neighbors next door, the ones a few doors up the road, the ones a few door down the other way... the ones.... We've a lot of small backyard flock around me...

I've been stung 4 times :this month, 1st 2 sundays ago ground bees my grand daughter told us about, went to find the nest .stung me not DH next day on the back of the run, I was pulling weeds from the electric wire, 1 stung me through my glove, the another got my foot and the third climbed up my pant leg and got me in the knee. booth times were ground bees
As long as he isn't by himself, his tail will not grow more than 12 inches or so as is. Not so much from other roos, but more because he's going to be mating. The only way to get the really long feathers is to keep them from reproducing for the first two years.

Speaking of phoenix.. Last night my Blue Boy caught himself a mole... little itty bitty velvety mole. That poor mole was making such a noise! Then the game of mole football commenced. That poor mole. I guess that may teach the other moles that deciding to have their little mole hole 2 feet outside of the phoenix coop... My 4 yr old was hysterically laughing at the 7 birds running around trying to get the mole. LOL Yuck.

would love to have seen that,

I would hate to have to put my dog down, I would think repayment and showing it won't happen again should be enough. But you should have to show you have seccured the dog better. second offense is different. It is a hard call to make, but the farmer should not be harrassed either. A very sad situation

I am firm believer of people taking responsibility for their dogs. But im one that needs hard evidence not posibilities or what ifs. Once i have that I fully agree in if your dog attacks someone or an animal then you take your dog out back and put them down
