Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Good fences make good neighbors! Or a lot of acres between neighbors. I spent my Saturday catching up on rest. And stealing honey from my honeybees! Three medium frames full of capped honey. They're strong, and this wet summer has made the flowers very prolific. So I didn't feel bad taking from them. I don't have an extractor, so I'll have to mash it all up and strain through cheesecloth.
WOW. That is beautiful.

good for you Opa, I have a friend that is 95, she is in Kent Comunity now, I go visit for a few hrs once a week, always bring her a boque of flowers from my garden, most of what I have came from her garden she loves to tell storys about many of the plants being from her mothers gardenand how they put the kids through college by selling at the farmers market. , She has tought a lot of people about gardening, out of the goodness of her heart and many of those people still come to visit her. may we all be lucky enough to plant seeds of love in those around us.

School will be started and it will be halloween before we know it, Hope my tomatoes and peppers rippen up before the snow flies. Vaccine for Mareks should be administered to day old chicks, before they have been exposed to the ground and/or flock, according to the MSU vet it is every were and not vaccinating is playing with fire. That said when I called the co. that sells the med they said it can be administered at any age, (of course they want to sell mor meds) I did vaccinate all my birds old and young and many oif them got no symptems at all, but that could have happened with or with out.
The thing to remember, too, with older birds that are vaccinated, it does not keep them from shedding the virus. If a bird is starting to exhibit symptoms, you can try vaccinating quickly, and hope that it will stop tumors and lesions. In older birds, that have been exposed, the same applies, stopping the possible mareks tumors and lesions. I do believe that is what is happening with my sisters... The one has a wing that is dropping, she's also looking like she's losing motor control of the right leg, and is starting to stumble. Its very disheartening. There will be no birds leaving here to trade to others. Eggs, yes, but not birds.

Yesterday we spent way to much time chasing chickens. Two pullets discovered that they could force their way through the mesh of the portable fencing. We chase them back only to have them escape again. Not sure how many times it happened but I finally reduced the size of the enclosure so that I could encircle it with some plastic fencing with a 1/2" grid.

Talked with a guy Saturday who has a 90hp jet outboard for sale or trade for guns and motors. He is asking $2400 so I offered a motor worth $1800 and a gun valued at $1000 and he felt that he would need substantially more. While I would like to have his motor I doubt if I will be doing business with him.

Stacykins - the honey looks wonderful. Growing up one of the greatest things was when Dad got out the hot knife to uncap the honey for extracting. We would shovel that warm wax/honey in and eat ourselves sick.

Nova - the other thing I remember the vet telling me about Marecks is that everyone exposed will not necessarily get the disease and they might not get it at the same time. If they have it, it's there but can pop up later in life.

Long weekend with a family reunion at our house. I had lots of comments on chickens, mostly "I didn't know chickens could look like that". They all determined my showgirl roo is the ugliest thing. We also played the chicken poop bingo which grossed out several people.

After a long list of issues we have decided not to repair and put more money into my vehicle. We found one just like it cheap so hopefully I will have something a bit more reliable to drive by the end of the week. DH should be back to work next week finally! He is ready for it now as he is up to 7 hours of PT a day, and it isn't massage or heat - it is all work hardening. We have bumblefoot surgery to do today. I thought I was able to take care of it by just taking out the scab and core but now it needs to be cut open and I can not do that. DH's department and I just hold the chicken still. We also have to start getting ready for the fair next week. I have the week off from work for it but I think work would be much easier.

Opa, I get such a kick out of your coffee pictures and wording! Loved the coffee IV yesterday!

Lisa and girls,
I love the honey picture! I was just reading a book from the library on bee keeping. It sounds like a lot of knowledge and work are needed to take on such a project. Thought just came to mind that it may keep unwanted neighbors out ;-)
Stacykins, we have more then 59 acres, and still had the neighbor turn us in... If material were not so expensive, I would but an electric fence all along his side of the property. I wouldn't want it on all sides as we touch national Forrest and deer visit daily!
Thank you to Wingless and others for advice to fight against township!

Good luck with your fight, unbelievable!!

Your neighbor put himself in a position of power over you by being on the board.... you may have to do the same. fight fire with fire! 59 acres... no reason why you shouldn't be able to change your zoning. Unfortunately, your neighbor will be able to block and counter every move you make. Good luck. Seems like anyone who tries to be 'nice' now a days ends up losing.
oh I am SOoooooooooo jealous about the honey!! our bees absconded on us....... we have nothing and have to start over next year. Sooo bummed about that!
Sam..... I see nothing but red flags on that guy selling the motor!
