Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hello all, just wanted to put it out there that I have a young Welsummer roo that would love to rehome!!! He's on the young side, hasn't started to crow but is very interested in the lady's already! I also have a very nice Wheaton Americana roo that needs to be rehomed both from good breeders, and are lovely birds! if there is interest in them I'm on the west side of the state but have to dive out to Anne arbor every month, later this week I'll be out that way if you could meet??
I know you let siblings breed? but I think i want to hold off to get unrelated Roos for the hens I have, something about letting the sibling breed sounds wrong!?!? Plus if I can help someone out Awsome!!!

Yet another morning spent in the courthouse. Kind of aggravated the prosecutor at first but then he saw reason and basically washed his hands of the motions being filed. However, the judge got pretty mad. He interrupted me, belittled me, talked about cases not relevant to today, refused to answer direct questions.  The funny thing was that the judge called the prosecutor to the courtroom and asked what was going on. The prosecutor said that they had no case. Even so, the judge rescheduled me to appear again on October 9.

Best of all are the witnesses signing affidavits showcasing the open hostility, bias and prejudice towards me.

There was also another Garden City chicken keeper there for arraignment who was granted a continuance to form his case defense.

Garden City -- Chicken Hating Capital of Michigan

Maybe you needs a facebbok page that can go viral. A couple years back when a lady in Michigan tried to have a front yard garden and the town started harassing her, she started a blog and Facebook page called oak park hates veggies. It got lots of support and negative attention to the city bullies and eventually she won her cases but ended up moving out of the state anyway.

I've talked to Julie several times. She is a wonderful lady.

I guess I have been using this forum and a couple of others to get the word out. I have a website domain for a blog and education, but frankly I am not that savvy in getting it published. Also, with the time and effort I've put in to MDARD meetings, support for small farms and other venues, I start to run out of steam. Then I have the OO constantly breathing down my neck for every little thing that he can dream up. It starts to take a toll and I can see why so many people simply cave in to the injustice visited upon them. Protecting one's rights is a full time job with lots of mandatory overtime.

I appreciate your support and that from all my BYC friends. I'm welcome any help that y'all care to provide.

I know I haven'tbeen around much this summer, but I hope that everyone is doing well.

My husband and I have begun saving for our downpayment and will likely be ready to buy sometime late next year. The excitement of it has be cruising websites like realtor.com and zillow. I've been eyeballing Howell and the area east of it (We both work in Livonia), and I was hoping some of you all that live there could clue me in on it.

Is it pretty common to find 5+ acres with a house in Howell? What kind of hoops will we need to jump through with the city before we can start our flock? How are the schools? What sort of amenities are within the city? Are there any other provisions concerning small scale homesteading that I should be aware of before we start our hunt in the area (I'd like to eventually add a few goats, bees, and rabbits down the road, maybe even one of Farmerboy's guinea hogs).

Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I don't live there but this is a recent post from the Michigan Small Farm Council regarding Howell.

Also, last August/September 2012, I was at a public meeting with the MDARD attorney when the attorney from Genoa Toawnship (near Howell) asked for advice on how to circumvent the RTFA for that township.

My statements are not intended to scare or alarm anyone. I hope to educate people to investigate the local and state politics that affect your lives. Please research and document everything that you can. (i.e. get it in writing)

I have had indoor full sized Icelandics, roosters, and trios, and also different bantams. They are cleaner then parrots or pigeons. A big wire crate with a tray, a roost and adequate feeders and waterers and its doable.

Very doable. Finches and canarys are great, but chickens lay edible eggs!  At least the hens do.

That sounds like a wild cucumber too. I dont know what the correct name is. A pest.

Not here now though, oaks are getting red leaves on the ones on the fence line, others are still green. Supposed to be 40 at night for the next week, which will be an improvement.

Yep. Pic taken from my back deck here in Howell a few minutes ago. Fall is here, seeing the red leaves. Blind up and ready.
Couple of bucks were here last night :)

Maybe Congress will continue their insanity & I will get opening day of bow season (1 Oct) off due to government shutdown....

Hey everyone! I just wanted to let everyone know that keeps meat birds I have a tub style mechanical chicken plucker I could loan out for processing time. Just turn it on and drop em' in! Im located in southern michigan near coldwater. Send me a private message if you would like. I'll even deliver it and pick it up. Anything to make the job easier! I wish I could have found one of these when I started meat birds... Plucking by hand is pretty rough. Anyway have a great day!
very nice of you, that is the worst part of doing birds

The "may or may not have chickens" ticket was dropped last month and is no longer in the system. The butterfly garden ticket was also dropped but it still on the computer as an "open" charge. The probation violation was "dismissed without prejudice" today.

Today's appearance was to address the porch and garage siding and neither was even discussed by the prosecutor or judge. The probation officer told me that there are three more charges being held in abeyance pending the outcome of the porch and garage cases that are still pending from July 2012. They are the only charges that have a case number assigned to them.
how can they not see that this is deliberate harasement??? They certainly don't seem to care about bad publicity, This is just un-real

good luck on your hunt

Later this morning I have an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon to discuss the problem with my hips and knees. While I'm sure there is nothing that can be done to correct the problem for this years hunting season, perhaps it will be the last year that walking any distance is a problem.

As my seventh decade looms in the near future I can't help but recall the warning given by my father that aging isn't for the faint of heart and I'm certainly finding that to be the case. One thing I do know is that we need to live each day to its fullest as the time when we no longer can comes much quicker than we ever thought possible.
My hubby is now in Casper, Wyoming hunting with brothers and "DAD" (who is in his 80's). Dad is holding up pretty well, but has two aneurisms in his chest, so this may be his last hunt. They are having a blast!

don't give up OPA; hip or knee replacements work really well. My Ex MIL had two knee replacements in her mid 90's and is now getting around fine. YOU CAN DO IT!

Met with the orthopedic surgeon today and after an extensive exam he imformed me that my hips and knees are fine and that my problems are caused by a condition called vascular claudition. Evidently it is a circulatory problem so now I have an appointment to see a vein specialist. Oh the joys of aging.
