Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

OK as you guys know I'm very new to this. One of my pullets...about 22 wk old, all of a sudden want to sleep a lot. Noticed it for the first time yesterday, She will get up and move around if I go in there but then walk away and she goes to sleep. She got up this morning and seemed to eat fine but I go in there again a little bit ago and she is still just wanting to sleep all day. I noticed she also has very liquid poops. Does this sound like cocci. I will go buy the corid today if that sounds like what it is. Will that hurt the chickens if they take it and they don't have cocci? This chicken thing is more stressful than I thought it would be!

have you checked them over for lice or mites? it's that time of year (i'm dealing with lice myself)

Hi Tsetse,

Try this reference

it was published in this site and may have some answers re: Cocci

I don't live there but this is a recent post from the Michigan Small Farm Council regarding Howell.
http://www.michigansmallfarmforum.com/index.php?/topic/112-chicken-ordinance-in-howell/

Also, last August/September 2012, I was at a public meeting with the MDARD attorney when the attorney from Genoa Toawnship (near Howell) asked for advice on how to circumvent the RTFA for that township.

My statements are not intended to scare or alarm anyone. I hope to educate people to investigate the local and state politics that affect your lives. Please research and document everything that you can. (i.e. get it in writing)
You may also want to check out insurance companies. We purchased our home on 8 acres in 2002. We have had the same company since then. The storm we had 2 weeks ago resulted in us filing a claim. Adjuster came out said " You have chickens? You can't have them on your policy, they are farm animals." He called Insurance agent and sure enough they are canceling us if we don't get rid of the chickens. I have been shopping around for another carrier but getting quotes for more that double what we are paying now.
We had gotten the okay from township but, who would have thought to check with their insurance company.

That just seems crazy! Why should it matter to ins if you have chickens?

I've been thinking about sheep. Bluefaced Leister's specifically since their wool is pretty amazing to knit with. Can anyone share the approximate cost of feed costs for sheep? If it's a lot, I won't be able to convince DH, but I like the idea of having my own sheep to get fiber from.....

Hello all. Haven't been able to get here in quite a while. Hope everyone is doing well. This summer my flock of Wellies was devastated by a family of foxes that learned to climb a 5' fence. Took me most of the summer to finally get them all in the crosshairs of my .17 cal. I am now left with only 4 hens and no rooster. Is there anyone in the St. Clair county area that would have an extra Wellie roo that they would be willing to give up. I will have to start rebuilding my flock in the spring but need a roo to get the process rolling.

Thanks a bunch
I'm not all that close to you but I have a Welsummer Roo that I have been going back and forth as to whether to list him for sale on CL. He's gorgeous. 5 months old now. I have 6 roos (not Welsummers) currently and I need to downsize. I was calling this guy Kellogg but now he's Special K, lol. He's in with 5 Wellie pullets (one of which has just started to lay tiny speckled eggs!!!). The only reason I'm thinking about selling him is that there is a good chance he's related to the Wellie pullets he's in with (he came as part of 15 pullets that I ordered and then did the sex change thing, lol). I can send you a couple pics if you want, just let me know.

Edited - Oops! Sorry - I should have kept reading. I just saw you got one from Sam.

I know there is other forums but I still don't get it? If a EE is a mutt then how is Ameraucana being a cross if bred together not a mutt? (Not trying to offend anybody)
So what is the difference between a Easter Egger and a Ameraucana? I understand that a Araucana is its own breed? Also does anybody in SE Michigan have any true Araucana chicks for sale?

There is a lady in Attica that has Araucanas and Ameraucanas for sale. I don't know if she's got any chicks right now but she is selling most of her flock off due to the fact that they are selling their farm and moving to Florida. I have her number and can contact her if you want. I just got a few mutt chickens and EE from her that are doing great so far. The EE's were close to POL and one of them just laid a huge blue egg. Much more blue than any of my other EE's.

edited for blonde issues . . .
