Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Ds's hat. Just need to block it and weave the loose ends in. Although I goofed on the crown shaping I'm happy with how it turned out since it was my first time with fair isle.

nice job

I have a few mechanics who figured this out the hard way. I put 1 out of business. Told me I had a blown head gasket, would cost 800. I said, no, I only paid 400 to buy the car; I was not paying 800 to keep it running. #@%`#) had the nerve to tell me I should talk it over with my H first.

I said loudly, in front of his PACKED lobby, I have been your customer fir over a year. In that tome, I have handled all calls, payments, arrangements, drop offs, pickups... You #%@(@)#% have never even spoken to my husband, let alone met him. Yet you have the NERVE to tell me that I need to talk it over with him! Give me my keys, now.

3 people grabbed their keys and left right after me, and the business was clised in less than a month.

Karma is fun.

And I won't even start my political input. I tend to speak graphically. Lol.
Oh, that's not very nice now is it? After all, they're only men, they can't help it!

I am distraught. For the past few months, my chicks have been dying. Just one, here, and one there. I had 17, now I have eight. There isn't a sign of illness, no predators. They will all be fine one day, and one dead in the morning. Just far enough apart in time that just as I think we are over whatever it is, we lose another one.

At first I thought it was just death from not being hardy. I prefer to lose those that aren't strong, but this is just too much. I'm afraid to get anymore until we figure out what this is. We had a necropsy done one time (at considerable cost), and nothing bad showed up. I'm baffled.

I'm actually thinking that they might be getting crushed. They all go to the same feeder the Muscovies use (even thought they have their own feeder) and the Muscovies are pretty big. I just can't think of anything else.

I am still a new B (pun intended) with chickens. The reason chicks are not ideal this time of year is because of good old Michigan weather, right? We have a broody, but won't let her sit since we are not wanting chicks, YET. We will in spring.
Also, I got a book from library about chickens. Based on its info, its looking like RIR are probably the best dual purpose? Anyone agree/disagree?

orpingtons are good dual purpose also

?? Since I'm slowly clearing out the veg/flower beds and mine(chicken, rabbits, duck) can't roam free what plants can't I give them? and should I give them the roots to?

Success. I was useful today. 28 ears of corn = 7 pints + 11 half pints canned. Can't believe how sweet it is..was eating raw while cutting off cob. Thought I had lost my window of opportunity after blanching & freezing 3 doz ears a few weeks ago.

Kind of freaky. Went to check on eggs & birds while canner cooling. What I thought was a hawk came whizzing about 10' above my head. Look around & there were about 8 circling & 4 in trees. Think turkey vulture based on going to Audubon society. But really didn't see red head, so maybe black. Appears not much to worry about with turkey, but maybe a little with black??? I'm freaking a tad, but birds seem to be taking care of themselves by staying under deck. Someone posted a day or so ago about having 9 in their yard (too lazy to back & search for post !)

Here are 4 of the ~10 circling...not great as I'm leaning over deck using iPad. Birds are under deck.

Yes those appear to be turkey vultures aka buzzards. That's how they fly/glide in a group usually but not always. Looking for food. They prefer dead animals. tMy girls always hide too. Even when the crows are out and sometimes starlings!
