Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

like Raz said you will need more ventilation, shop around if you get a heated water-er as the price can very, they do hang or you could do as some suggested and just trade them out, bring in at night and it should thaw by morning

had an absolutely beautiful cooper 's hawk in my run this eve, he was young and so scared he forgot what he was there for.
my run is covered so he had to come in the door then found he was trapped

Is your door full (human) size? I am building a run and included only a human size door, maybe I should put in a chicken door to the yard as well?
That is totally disgusting! Here I eat more chicken thinking its's better for me. Only to find it probably worse.........

Sad start to my day. My son woke me with the news that he thought his cat was dead. There was something between the chimney and house. I checked. Yes, our adorable 3-legged kitty had been mauled by something. He died right next to a nest of about a dozen eggs, which means our pullets from the first spring hatch have started to lay.

We keep our breeding flock as free rangers, and the egg flock is locked up in coop and run.As soon as I opened the run door to go in to feed my layers, one of my breeders (not sure if a mama or a pullet) darned near ran me over to get inside the 'safe house'. So, whatever killed the cat has scared the heck out of my birds, too.
So sorry :(

I was looking on Amazon at the heated dog water bowls for the winter for my chickens and ducks, this is my 1st winter and love all the advice on here. They only run between $15 and $25. Does anyone use them and recommend them? Don't look like they would use much energy. Thinking of going to Birch run this weekend for the Fall fowl festival I read about. Has anyone gone to that one? Do they have alot that are for sale? Thanks
I had one for my cats on the (indoor) back porch, sadly it did not last 1 season even.

Is anyone selling eattin chickens in the Wayne/Washtenaw/Monroe area?

I want to try my hand with a lovingly raised chicken and try it against a store bought one to impress upon my husband the taste difference, since I can't seem to sway him with the ethical and health arguements. (The arguement being why farm raised is infinitely better in all ways to commercial chicken)

((I wouldn't be opposed to cleaning it myself on site, I just don't have privacy anywhere to do it without my neighbor's calling the city on me))

Thanks, for the heads-up; and I do plan on it as once again my iron was on the low side when they tested it. Last time I was turned down cuz it was too low...so, I will take my supplement when I get home, eat a TON of brocolli & venison!! That was my 44th pint..:)

.UUUUUUGH. Time to be a big girl and call the guy on the corner about reimbursing us for our chickens. Yes. It's been 4 months and he still hasn't paid us for the TWENTY SIX dead birds. I almost want to say, "you need to pay me or I'm going to take you to small claims court" but I don't actually WANT to take him to small claims court, and that he'll think I'm daring him to not pay and see if I really mean int. I just want him to pay me a REASONABLE amount for my losses, and be done with it.

Anyone have any words of wisdom for key phrases that I could throw at him during what is sure to be an unpleasant exchange?

I use the heated dog dishes in my two coops during winter. Love em! Every few days I go in with a container of fresh water and a bucket and paper towel. Dump dirty water in bucket, wipe with paper towel and fill with fresh! Easy as can be. I've had the bowls for a few years now, and no problems with them.
Fowl fest is this week end? Darn. Taking the grand kids for a Halloween Camping trip. It's interesting to see all the different breeds of chickens there. And ducks and geese. They usually have a lot of birds to sell. Cutler Supply is there and you can buy what ever you need for your chickens.

I also used a heated dog dish in one of my coops last year, same response as above. Thanks for the reminder about fowl fest.
