Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

About the hardware cloth: I've found that 3 and sometimes 4 layers of the cheaper chicken wire is strong and it works well here. I do use hardware cloth buried ~12" below ground and appx 4' up the sides of my pen. The outdoor house has hw cloth under it, but that is probly overkill as the house is inside the pen. Neighbor uses electric and can't say enough great things about it.

I, too, have HW cloth buried around the perimeter of run (& part of run covered by metal roof, extension covered by HW cloth; all sides of run HW cloth ). Birds are stuck in run during the day unless one of us are home; then we let free range.

I have gotten my HW cloth thru Amazon where I have found it to be 50% cheaper than Home Depot/lLowes, etc (free 2 day shipping w/Amazon Prime). Think I paid $70 for 100' of 1/2x 24" x 100' a few weeks ago (Mat Midwest is the seller thru Amazon..)

Kathi, I hope you're not beating yourself up. It's a sad and expensive lesson. Stay around here, and once your done securing the coop, and ready for another batch, you're likely to find some here.

As beautiful as those former asylum buildings are, I couldn't imagine opening up a shop in one. http://www.thevillagetc.com/

We ate dinner in the basement of it. Little restaurant called Pepenero, Italian, excellent food but yeah, it's sort of in a storeroom - kind of dark, brick walls, concrete floor. REALLY COOL!

Well... yesterday was spent putting my jeep door back on. Again. Already rusting away, the tab of metal we originally put a bolt through had given way, and the bottom hinge pin is so corroded and thin, BUT don't dare try and take that hinge off, as it's barely hanging on as well. Jimmy rigging long enough metal straps to go into tiny places, and get them in place just right to bolt seems that it wouldn't turn into an event of pain in the butt proportions, but it can. Why is it I can smack together a coop, but can engineer simple peices of metal and bolts? Huh... ANYWAY, door is back on, lined up as much as possible given the rusting conditions... I think it is nearing time to get a new vehicle. But the engine is running so good! I need some front end suspension, but I can't even do that... rust. gotta love rust.

Anyway. Loner is hanging in there. He's a spaz when I get him out to hang out with me. It was quite fun teaching him to eat, and giving him little chick treats. Even funnier still when he went running across the kitchen counter ( i was kneeling down) and he flew across my shoulder, tried to stop... and didn't. Prefers to be on my shoulder, or high on my chest, under my chin, against my neck or in my hair. I hope to not have chick chit in there. Ick. Good thing I have running water.

Saw the biggest hawk I ever saw yesterday too. BIG thing. I think I could have taken off with my friends mini chi if it had been out. Yikes. Guess I am going to have to start being vigilant here as the leaves start to fall. Fall seems to be the worse time of year for me with hawks. Beautiful birds. Just go be beautiful some where else.
The JEEP! I thought you got rid of it. Must have the kinks worked out...

Back from Chicago. My son John Jr. ran the Chicago Marathon. Not a bad weekend but glad to be back to my chores. Even though we went out for dinners my favorite meal was at Downtown Dogs just off Michigan near the Park Hyatt. OMG, I ate two signature dogs and small (large) fries. I was the first one in when they opened.

Butter made from raw milk is better than store-bought imho. I will sometimes culture the cream before "churning" (blender) to make cultured butter, giving it a little extra something.

Anyway, I've been out of town, up around the 45th parallel this weekend. Spent time at the dunes (despite the roadblocks), wineries and such. My favorite spot was the Northern Michigan Asylum. LOVE abandoned historical buildings and here was a whole campus of 'em - took lots-o pictures.

Michigan love.

Hey! you were in my backyard!

The REALLY COOL thing about the old mental hospital is that they've renovated a couple of them and now have things such as restaurants, art shows, and an indoor farmers market there! Building 50 is way awesome. I know from time to time they do guided tours as well.

Peak color week up here too. It's supposed to rain Tuesday-Sunday, so we'll probably lose a LOT of leaves in a short amount of time.

Nope, John, do not. Took it to the dealership and even they couldn't finger it. Just making due. With the cooler weather, its not over heating any, but now, that power steering pump I just replaced... Not that part, but now I have to wait for pressure to build so it'll turn right. Lol. Then all day it is fine. But every morning, gotta let it warm several minutes. Lol. I am FIGHTING not gettin g a new ride. Not just yet. Saving for it, I prefer cash to loans. I am a, if I came pay cash, can't afford it, type of person. Especially now with my future ins. Costs. Woohoo ACA!
