Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

It is migration time for hawks, and for the next few weeks expect ranging birds to be at constant risk. A good time of the year to keep them penned unless you are physically with them. Just a reminder, it is illegal (and an extremely poor idea) to kill birds of prey.

Sorry for your loss bluebirdnanny also..

Made some jerky from my 3 old non laying hens.. turned out awesome.. everyone loved it..also slow roasted the bones and got some broth and meat to make soup with tomorrow..

He isn't crowing this morning but can move between the two parts of the little coop and stomps his feet and 'talks'. But they were both awake when I attempted to check at 10 and again at 1 this morning.

The 2x4 I added as a roost connects to edge of nesting box she walked out on when I lifted the nest box lid to check on her. But she is not jumping down. She moved like an old person with arthritis so I think she is hurt.

Going to leave them status quo in there as a hospital pen for now.

After breakfast will head to Hillman for some supplies to finish closing off unfinished parts of larger coop. Then I can leave open the little coop pop door and they can go between them. That way I can sit in there with them or watch through the screened open front to access health.

Congrats to you kids entering your 2nd half century !

It is more interesing as you go along.

Re Icelandics, I dont have any pullets to spare but do have some nice Roosters growing out . Freezer camp wont happen for another month or so. But it will be.

Happy Birthday Naglady! Hope you feel better!

I met Gail yesterday and gave her some more eggs for her Pysanky art. She makes some of the best I've seen!

Happy Birthday, naglady!

Sorry for your loss, bluebird

Even when you are outside with your flock free ranging, you still need to be on the look out for hawks. I was outside in the backyard playing with my two dogs. We're chasing each other and the dogs are running around. The hens were free ranging out in the back, also. Such a happy scene. Even my old cat was out with us, following us around. All of a sudden, the chickens start running towards the bushes. Not 10 feet from me, a hawk swoops down and lands on the ground between a couple of chickens!! It just sat there, while I stood in shock and then reality hit and I ran towards it and it flew off, but now far. To the neighbors tree.
This is actually the second time the hawk has landed among the chickens. It's a Merlin hawk. Not common around here, but hey, they have wings and can go anywhere they want! So, be alert and look up and scan the trees and poles and rooftops often!
