I am not an electrician, but I do know there is something about running appliances with a high power draw on a long extension cord..

People in construction use #12 or 10 two wire with ground to fashion simple, efficient, utilitarian, extension cord than is heavy duty plus. Bet one could find out how on DIY.

I am/was an electrician before I went into the military (I’m still a member of I.B.E.W. Local 58). I would suggest running a 12 gauge wire from the hose to the chicken coop (unless you’re running other items besides basic lighting and plugs). Voltage drop starts to occur when you get around 220 or 250 feet. If you run a direct burial wire, I would suggest a 12/3 which means there is a black, red, white, and ground wire in it. The reason for this is so that you can put a switch in the house or garage to turn on a light at the coop. It’s just easier to turn on that light than to have to trek out to the coop at night if you hear something wrong out there.

It says you live in Capac. I can come out there and help you run it and show you what to do to hook everything up……just PM and I will give you my phone #. I live up in the North Branch area so it’s not a big deal to go out there.

What a generous person. Such a deal !

Today is election day, go exercise your right to vote.

To vote for the considered choice one makes for persons running for office or for proposals is not only a right. The term duty comes to mind.

you can berry the extension cord in PVC pipe with out much trouble, gets it out of the way, wrap any connections with duct tape
The problem on the extension cords is the distance. DH says when u start going over 100 ft out, it can sometimes start tripping other stuff. Might still try it, they dishes are thermal regulated, figure they can't draw that much electricity. However, I love the pipe idea. Thanks

I have the same problem with my goat pastures... not sure what we're going to do this year DH doesn't want to run power down for lights even. I was thinking about solar lights, but they're made so darn cheap. I think I'll wait till he bangs his head enough times on stuff in the dark for him to decide we need power out there! LOL!

That would be awesome, I will let DH know and message you. I don't think I need light, it would be running the heated dishes for winter, especially with the ducks. I only have 4, but they drink alot!!!

My 16-year old daughter informed me today that there are only 49 days until Christmas. I tried not to show my dismay with this information as I'm so not ready for that time of year.

I told her this year I would get her a puppy for her gift. She doesn't know what she wants exactly as far as breed but would rather rescue one or get one not from a breeder. There are so many unwanted animals that need homes. So if any of you have any puppies for sale, send me some pictures of them and we will start the selection process. We will need a younger one as my existing dogs (2 boston terriers) accept puppies easier. We do have cats as well. We can pick up the pup as soon as they are old enough to go to their forever home.

Thanks so much

not sure where in Michigan you are, but I know a few people that volunteer and foster with lake haven animal rescue in newago area. It is a no kill shelter and they are very passionate and caring. They do have a Facebook group page as well as website. But I know they have lots of dogs to the point where they cannot take anymore right now.

I'll probably get in trouble for this, but IMO, getting a puppy from someone who just *happens* to have puppies (even fellow BYC'ers) isn't ANY better than getting them from a breeder, except that a *good* breeder will have health checks on the parents, know temperament, and offer some sort of health guarantee. Someone who "just happens" to have puppies isn't being a very responsible pet owner if you REALLY believe that you'd rather rescue than buy because of pets needing homes. Our current foster dog is 18mo old and just had her THIRD litter of puppies and her body was so whacked out from the constant depletion of nutrition growing and feeding puppies that several of her last litter died because she was unable to produce enough milk to adequately feed them. Her previous owners "just happened" to have puppies because they didn't care enough to separate their un-altered male and female dogs when she came into heat. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE support a local non-profit rescue and adopt a pup that's already been spayed or neutered and is UTD on its shots. Rescues desperately need the support, and the adoption fees generally don't even cover the vet expenses put into them.

Off my soap box now.

ETA: Lake Haven in the above post is a great suggestion.

what a nice Christmas gift, my grand-daughter got one for her birthday, love puppy's, even free is not cheap, by the time you get all the shots and have them fixed......just got our last shots and rabies today, still amazes me how much more it costs now then yrs ago.....just think how simple life would be if we didn't like animals, no chicken feed, dog or cat food, shots coops runs, etc....we must be crazy!!!........course I have a lot of friends that think I am

This is the coop we built this year. We plan on raising a few different breeds, so each room has it's own outside run.

love the coop and all the windows

OOOOH. before winter *really* gets here.
I agree get them out of the house, may need a light at night, not sure what the temps are to be this week, wind free is most important

What a generous offer with the electric, and if you are going to run a good wire put in a light and switch at the same time. not much trouble once you have the power out there and SO worth it when it gets dark so early

don't need a lot of power, I have 1 light and I run the water dishes in the winter, can get a power cube that turns water-er on at 35 degrees and off at 45
