Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I am googling breeds I think they could be to see what the chicks look like, now I got all excited because the Blue Wheaten Americaunas look like some that I have, that would be so cool!!

green, congrats on your chicks - sorry about the two Isas, though. :(

It's so much fun watching them grow & develop!

Thanks, but make that 3 more when I just now went out to check on them, that is 5 dead total, that is sad to me, I didn't expect that much of a loss, at least they are all the Isa's I only say that because I had ordered 25 of them, at least I have plenty left.

greenmimama - I have heard that some people put sugar water out for the chicks and even dip their beaks in the sugar water. Maybe your son would enjoy doing that with the remaining Isa Browns and it might help prevent more losses also! Good luck with your chickens!
I would enjoy seeing them grow if you post photos!!

I was trying to post some to facebook and then make a public album, but my phone won't load up here in the boonies, maybe once I go into town tonight.

Do you think melting the sugar in warm water, how much? a few tablespoons, or just wing it?

well, I think I'm going to take the 2 chicks that hatched out of the incubator tonight. (unless I REALLY shouldn't) The older one will be around 40hrs old, and the younger around 28hrs old when I think I'm going to move them over. Today is day 22. Should/can I do a quick candle on my remaining 5 eggs? Float test? They aren't rocking, and I don't think they're chirping (which is why I'm wondering about checking on them...they lack any outward signs of being alive still), not that I'd be able to hear it over the houdan. That little one is loud! I know that eggs *can* hatch a few days late, but I'm getting quite pessimistic about things at this point.

Hello to all.... been really busy. Nursing school is no joke! Glad my little guy started kindergarten at the same time. I wouldn't get a thing done if he was home with me!

Have a question... I thought Leghorn's weren't supposed to go broody? Mine was staying in the nesting box on her egg earlier in the week. I reached under her to get the eggs and after some time she'd be out in the yard with the others. Now she has quit laying and is still sitting in the empty nest box. I have taken her out a few times, but she goes back after a bit. I feel bad that she's sitting on an empty nest. What if anything should I do for her? We don't have a rooster and although we plan to get a few chicks in the spring, I wouldn't want to get some eggs to hatch and have her change her mind on me.

Thanks for any advice
