Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Mine love their big door open when the sun is out also. They all they right there and soak it up, while I'm in worrying that it's to cold to have the big door open. lol
Lbry,

Mine too...here are my afraid to go in the snow chicks

but I don't blame them, it is so frigid.

Notice my last in pecking order EE pullet "Peep" just looking out the pop door! she and her EE sis Hawkie were the two of my flock that decided to have a mild molt the beginning of December! Those two are staying in the coop for good reason.

malted corn?

Sounds like a "human" treat to me...???

I heard that you can add any sort of seeds to the sprouts which I hope they like barley. I got Valor barley by the bushel for $18.00.

I have some BOSS, maybe throw some of that in too? They eat that shell and all right now though...

Tell me more about malted corn RaZ?
It can be. There are several more steps after the malting.

They will eat BOSS shell and all, but a nice little treat is the sprouted sunflowers. I learned the hard way that chickens will eat nearly anything sprouting. My first year I lost dozens of hostas and they wiped out an entire hop patch. And hops are hard to kill.

What, you won't come? I was hoping you'd do a new tee shirt design. I had some rooster art and with a hen art I think we'd have something for the guys and gals.

Sorry to hear about the kittens.

Do you send out your blood samples? I had the vet do our's a few years ago. Let me know your procedure. Please PM me if you want.

BTW, the chatter about posts has mostly been about people missing from the thread. Friends that are missed...

Just not sure if I'll be able to this year. DH travels so much... but we'll see. I mentioned because people will need to help out, it can be fun and for people not to be afraid to do so. But, I would be more than happy to do a design for CS again.

I actually lost two litters of rabbits.. one from your buck (who is named Eeyore, btw, by DH who really likes him) again, different doe... one of these days I'll see what he can do.

Goat testing:

I'll be pulling samples via jugular vein and sending to Waupun Veterinary Service Lab in WI. They were the closest that also did the Johne's, and were reasonably priced.. for 4 goats: CAE, Johne's and one pregnancy test and fees, is $56.50 for all. I purchased the starter blood draw kit from BioPRYN for $15.00 (11 draws worth ?) and I'm sure shipping will be $25.00 or so.
As I understand it, this is the first time for us, Shave a 3x6 or so area on the neck in the grove off to the side. Have someone hold the goat with their legs behind the goats front legs, backed into a corner. The helper hold the goats head to the side at a 30 deg angle.. to draw, line up the groove in the neck and center of the goats eye and put your finger in the groove,,, it's supposed to help the vein pop and be easier to find. Clean the neck around the area with a surgical prep.. (I may just use alcohol) Put the needle w/cap in at an upward angle toward the head. leave finger in grove while drawing. Insert the collection tube into the cap and it should fill automatically if not reposition the needle. Remove finger from groove and pull the needle. They want at min- 2 cc's and can do all the tests from that one sample. Change the needle for each goat. Label as you go and make sure it corresponds with the id sheet. During winter you don't have to worry about packing in ice, but johne's testing has to be kept cold, the others don't matter and she said freezing doesn't hurt the sample. BioPryn actually has good draw directions on their site. http://www.biotracking.com/?q=goats/biopryn/use

Silly, I wish you lived closer. One of my does is in heat and my "go-to" buck is not available now. Another promise down the tubes. I think my best bet is to find my own NGD buckling and keep him myself.

BTW, i may have a buckling in march... ;)

Well, what a bummer about the bunnies. I won't be breeding again until spring in time for CS sales.

Thanks for the info on the draws. I give the CDT shots but never drew blood - sounds like another adventure! I'll have to think about that...

Yeah, think about the roo/hen shirts. I'd not going to wear an uggo, lol!

If you have a NGD with blue eyes buckling, and I don't have one by then, who knows - I might have to visit your farm
