Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

@ladyrsanti

Does anyone recommend Meyer Hatchery? They are advertising that they now have true Americauna and I wanted to order 1 or 2, would love to add blue eggs with my green and pink ones. Was thinking 1 or 2 Marans for the chocolate eggs also. Hope everyone has a great weekend!!!  ;)

i would also add that if your looking for nice dark marans eggs find a breeder and see the eggs that are set if you can. Most hatchery (i have ordered from 3) will not give you the color you are looking for. I even got some from a guy who only does marans and i am getting poor color from those hens. Just be warned to get good marans youll pay at least. 10 a chick. I may have some available later this year. June julyish.

If they spelled it as AmerIcuana, then it isn't an Ameraucanas they're selling, as there is no i in the breed's name. Actually, here is a discussion had on Ameraucana.Org about Meyer's "Ameraucanas", and their consensus is that there are some deficiencies when it comes to meeting SOP. But things might've improved, I dunno.

Also, Meyer hatchery is charging MUCH more than a breeder would per chick, for those Ameraucanas, than actual Ameraucana breeders!

I'm not sure if anyone listens to WRIF on the radio in the morning - namely Dave and Chuck the Freak - but I do sometimes as I'm on my way to work. They had a rather entertaining discussion about a gentleman who was eating at KFC the other day and found something attached to his chicken breast that he thought was a brain. He then proceeded to barf all over inside the KFC restaurant. KFC corporate stated that it was a lung attached to the chicken breast and not a brain. Either way I thought that kind of goes along with not knowing where your food comes from OR what conditions the birds are in or how they are treated in captivity.

@gladahmae -Thanks, I will check him out. I normally would be leary of craiglist, but if everyone knows him should be ok.

@muttsfan -Great article, will def have to pay attention to spelling, thought the 2 were the same bird.

@eatwhatyougrow - I thought all marans laid dk eggs. lol still new at this chicken thing. I just want a hen or 2 for egg color, so I might wait and do a lil research yet. $10 don't seem bad for a hen just for egg color.

@Stacykins -their EE's and OE's are under colorful layers and under blue layers is only Ameraucanas, It was my spelling that i put the "i" in. LOl . How do you do orders through like TSC or local farm store?

Thanks everyone for the help and advice. Now that I looked back at the hatchery catalog to check for spelling, an OE and Faverolle have also now caught my eye. OMGosh, this is so hard, must be spring fever setting in.

that's the guy! he also has a website and you can order chicks. chickhatchery.com or something like that I think?
I have some of his Am. they are beautiful and sweet I have silver,black and lavender but the lavender are def. bantams (are supposed to be standard) very small, but beautiful and sweet. I have some of his chanteclairs also, if you are ordering from him do it soon as he is not a large hatchery and may run out of some collars

Wynette (on here, also from MI) breeds marans as well. Last year someone got a couple of her cull hens at chickenstock (not up to her standards to be breeders) and gets really nice dark eggs. Just a thought. :)

Tractor Supply should have chicks next month....call your local store and see if they have a date or not. Otherwise, you can order from them (TSC) any time I believe, but you have to order 25 chicks if you do an independent order. Not sure if you would skirt the shipping that way, might be easier to just order directly from townline. I'm starting an OE project this summer, but I'm way up north. Nova (I think??) has favorelles. Or talk to RaZ.....he may know where you can find some.

Ah, got it. I guess every time I see an I in Ameraucana, I jump to conclusions!

I actually don't order any chicks now. All mine are hatched from hatching eggs. If I want ducks, I get duck hatching eggs. More Araucanas, Araucana hatching eggs. I made this choice after getting a box of chick death from Meyer hatchery (they spent five days in the mail). I was the post office's fault, not the hatchery's. But it still meant all those chicks suffered and died. At least if eggs take too long in the mail they are A: often still viable and B: don't suffer. Also, it means I have access to breeds hatcheries often don't provide, like my Araucanas.

Also, hatching is SO MUCH FUN!
