When it comes to the statistics that we are all bombarded with in the media or any other source, I believe it is incumbent upon everyone to not just take them at face value or "truth".
I am sure with all the proposed GAAMP changes, those in the government proposing said changes have some sort of statistics "backing up" why it is "so important & necessary" to adopt the changes.
As far as I can tell, the proposed changes have nothing to do with statistics and/or science but everything to do with politics. I have written to the committee chair to ask her why the Site Selection GAAMP is the only one without scientific research and citation.
Love the quotes, over the years I have seen the same statistics used to "prove" booth sides of many story's

The media takes advantage of those that don't think and just believe what they hear.
4 out of 3 people do not understand statistics.

Media is a strange animal; they all seem to be serving their own private agenda. The last radio interview I did was very strange. The host clearly had an agenda and I barely got the chance to talk about what is going on.

I dumped about 10 lbs of scratch grain in it. Less than an hour later 25 turkeys were having a picnic. I think today I'll pick up 100 lbs of shelled corn and help them get through this winter.

I think this winter is going to take a heavy toll on wildlife. The deep snow cover makes it difficult for wildlife to find food. The bitter cold has frozen just about all the open water making hydration a real problem. Waterfowl are really having a problem. Last week I watched several deer struggling through deep snow and they were sopping wet. The exertion makes it harder to stay warm plus it burns up a lot a stored calories.
I bought a 50# bag of shelled corn a couple of weeks ago and none of the birds or other wildlife will touch it. I tried to malt some and it failed to sprout. It did ferment to an extent but it didn't smell right. I wonder if it is contaminated or GMO or something. It came from a well known farm in Saline.
Rather than waste it, I'm using it as a traction aid on the icy driveway and sidewalk.
My squirrels are fat and happy with daily rations of peanuts. My pond has a heater to keep am opening in the ice for gas exchange and the birds sit on it while drinking.

It's all just fear mongering and manipulation...
One of the people pushing the gaamps, Jim someone, said they're trying to prevent people in an urban setting from having 49999 backyard chickens..... totally misleading people to think the gaamps are good because who would want 5K chickens next to them? ...this is what they want people to think will happen.. It's all about control and manipulation.

(I agree with you Sam, I was taught to respect and use chickens responsibility at a very young age).
It is Jim Johnson and Wayne Whitman publicly spewing false and misleading information. Whereas Director Jamie Clover Adams is more subtle about undermining our rights. But they are lying to the public and media and local governments.

I treat every chicken as if it is loaded.

I have a small flock and take care to keep it small, but one of the scary parts about that is there is always a chance to lose one. So with that in mind i always keep my most valuable hen's eggs for at least a week in a cool area *just in case* My flock is for the sole purpose of continuing my lost pet pair's genetics going.

At the moment i'm very happy with my main group of roo and hens, both with color and temperament. Bumblefoot is worrying me though, they can't seem to kick it no matter what. :( I don't understand, i've even done surgery, iodine, everything? It has to be the roost. I'm going to get the salve recommended in the next couple of days. Stuuuupid winter! I need it to be over so i can get the rest of the surgeries done before i start losing girls!!!!!!

I've come to the conclusion that it's in the genetics on whether roos will attack or not.
I have tried handling a lot, and barely handling; handling PROPERLY is super important! Bringing groups of people out to socialize the birds, keeping them in their own bubble, buying known friendly breeds....Some just turn and some don't. And i'd rather be attacked by a roo that i can communicate with than one that's buck wild! (it's happened, attacked the back of my head when i was sitting down, very lucky to have kept both my eyes!)
A good roo is worth more than a flock of hens. (At least from a breeding perspective) I think buying a roo from an old established flock is more likely to give you a good one since the meanies probably ended up in the stew pot along the way. If my breeding efforts pan out in a few more years i might have consistently good birds, that is my hope. Since my only *good* up and coming ee roo from my breeding pen died, i have been forced to go to auction and try to suss at least one good boy out.
I love my boys and it is upsetting that so many "turn" on you, or are mean to hens........ i think more people would keep roos if they were predictable.

Speaking of Sheep... can't wait to get my hands on these fleeces and see the girls nicely shaved. Penny has just been full of herself lately.
March 22nd / 23rd is the Annual AA Fiber Expo at the Saline Fair grounds... think I'm going to try to attend. I need some carders and a drop spindle... and some pointers!

Aw, she's sweet. I'm currently cold soaking the last of the three fleeces shorn last spring. Tomorrow I'll wash it. Just a couple of more months! I'm going to call my commercial sheep "neighbors" to help shear this year rather than tackling it myself. This guy knows what he's doing and I hope to learn a lot from him. He's the sheep superintendent for the Kent Co. Youth Fair and very nice guy. Shearing them myself was reeeeeeeally hard, especially my woolly bear wether.

As per the news discussion... Television news outlets are for entertainment purposes. They are owned by huge corporations like Fox and Disney. Nasty businesses. If you want real news, read a paper. NPR, BBC are good and fairly reliable. Everything else is questionable and you need to take anything they say with an entire salt shaker.

Picture of my EE and Coronation Sussex eggs. They're so pretty together.
