Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hey pals, just a heads up in case you were like me and closed up the coop a bit to help keep in warmth. It's time to open up more ventilation. With all of the melting in the day, and freezing at night, frostbite is more likely to happen. Our poor Alice has a small bit of her comb that fell victim last night. Today it's covered in Vaseline, and I opened more vents.
Learn from my (and Alice's) cautionary tale.

@Amy PT Thanks for warning, but I already got them open, but last night one of my RIR's got a little bit anyway.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for one of my poor partridge rock hens. She had gotten herself hung up on something and just about ripped her last section of her middle toe off :hit
Since it was only hanging on by some skin, I felt the best option for her was amputation. My husband helped me cauterize her stub and we liberally doused it with iodine. Poor baby...she's in a crate resting now. She was VERY calm during the procedure, I had her wrapped in a towel with only her feet sticking out. I feel so bad though, I've had chickens for more than 7 years and I've never had to "operate" before. I really hope it heals up well.

I just watched a documentary (Radioactive Wolves of Chernoblyl) that to me at least strongly suggests the best thing that could happen to everything but humans is a super widespread nuclear disaster. Its very depressing to realize that our species' existence constitutes a disaster for nearly every other species.
On a cherrier note, its supposed to be above freezing for at least a week, hopefully it is, I am sooooo ready.

hi back at you! Been so busy lately, I haven't been doing much on BYC.

Just had my first hacth of the year - got some Lavender Ameraucanas (plus one blue and one black) and two Birchen/Wheaten Marans, and one OE. Next hatch will be for Easter. Setting Swedish Flower Hens, and hopefully, Cream Legbars and SG Dorkings.
