Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Nice lamb, Silly. Do wethers have any fleece value, or are they just for meat?

Tap, just let me know. I did remove my head roo and one of the cockerels over the weekend, leaving one of my 7 month old GFF boys in there - he seems to know his job but don't have any way of telling until eggs get incubated. Sure is quieter around here with 3 fewer roosters.

Very blustery here again today, still have snow in areas and with the cold and wind it feels like an early March day.

I think the next step is to grass roots this to the state. Collect signatures and propose our own GAAMPS, one that allows X number of animals based on lot size, and not on abritrary zoning. Also ones that will not exempt CAFOs from environmental issues. If we can get people on board with the "No poisons in our water" then it wouldn't be hard to include a rider that will support suburban/urban farming.

The whole "you're not a farm if you are in residential" is BS anyways, because I could be a potato farmer on 2-3 acres, or have such a huge garden that I could run a CSA, but they don't consider that farming? ***.

Thought of you when I saw this, Opa

Thanks everyone for the congratulations for my engagement and the birth of my niece. My grandparents have been married for 61 years, and my parents have been married for 31 years, so I do hope for a very long and happy marriage for Grace and I.

Must have missed this post, CONGRATULATIONS!! you are very lucky, Grace seems like a very nice girl, hope you both can come to CS again this yr.

for now I guess I'm close to safe, but that doesn't mean I'll stop fighting it...

I'd like to end this on a happy note. I just spoke to the breeder I got my Jacobs ewe from today... told him I've not seen any indication Dani is going to drop any lambs. No weight gain, no udder development (I spent a good part of the day in the pasture Sunday)... and well.... I came home to THIS!

She's a good mom so far. I had to split the sheep area (like I did the goats) to jug them a bit and keep Penny from butting the baby. Penny I suspect may have lambs too so I moved the camera on to her. Sadly it's a little ram, but he is beautiful so ... who knows.

Beautiful! If he's got good wool, not too much britch and no quilting, I'd totally castrate ;)

Yep, if their wool is good, they're great for fleece. My wether gives more and better quality wool than either of my ewes. That's why I picked him out of the flock though. Many are best as shawarma.

.... I will have some rest time as I get to spend the next three days at a conference on Mackinaw Island at the Grand. Since nothing else is open yet it should be quiet. However the catch is getting there. Hopefully the weather is better tomorrow because today I'm not liking any of my options. It has been so windy!
.....
Librarian conference?
Ours is going, was saying yesterday that the docks on the island are still iced in and that a lot of the straights are still iced over 3 ft thick.

Safe Travels!

Lady if I sent you a sample of his wool later this fall... could you offer your opinion on his wool quality? I am very much a noob when it comes to wool.

I'm undecided... I don't want "extra" mouths to feed that don't produce. I've even thought about getting rid of my wether goats but they keep my billy company........ The ram can be registered and bred to my other ewe, and then castrated? I don't know... I'll wait n see for now. I have a ram lamb on reserve with a breeder, so I may need to keep one around for a buddy for my new ram............

I need more pasture!

Penny has also bagged up so I may end up with another lamb (this one will be for eating as it is half dorper). Keeping fingers crossed that she does ok, the ram that covered her was a big boy.

I had to look shawarma up... sounds wonderful... but DH doesn't like lamb (though he only had it once at my DB home and it wasn't that good). We will be getting Penny's lamb processed. I only want Jacobs here and a dorper is a hair sheep.

Agreed... I also suggest, getting involved with your township, run for council...I've been thinking about it myself.
