Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

We were talking a few days ago about hens laying more than one egg a day.
Well, it happened here yesterday. I received 3 eggs from 2 Ameracaunas. Or else one of the brown layers decided to lay a blue egg.

Is anyone going to Lansing this Thursday for the meeting at 8:30AM?

Also, do chickens get sad when a member of their flock leaves? They are all almost three months, and we just re-homed our silkie roo today. I think we're more sad than they are. And is it really just as simple as putting another chicken the same age in with them at night-time to introduce another to the flock?

I didnt hear anything, but I only held it for maybe 30 seconds or less before putting it back. I sure hope she hatches at least a couple out tomorrow!

ETA: I went back out to check and it IS peeping!!! I'm so excited. This is my first hatch. I listed to a couple others and didnt hear anything though :( BUT, its hard to hear because there are 15 5 week old chicks running around in there and they are all peeping too.

I've been wondering how yours' have been doing!!!

My hatch day is tomorrow....it is taking EVERYTHING for me to not grab Maia & see what's going on underneath her!

I could not wait to get home yesterday after being gone the last 2 weeks...drove me nuts not being here myself to watch over her....

@Opa
I read your post after JUST coming in from picking my first batch of asparagus from my garden...glad I did it right (first year I've had it, first time I've ever "picked" it) ;)

Yeah, I'm not very good at this. I peeked this morning and one of the chicks has hatched! I know for sure that 2 of the eggs were viable and peeping, but I'm not sure about the other 4. I'm having a hard time not running out there every hour to check! I'm about to remove myself from the situation completely and go into town ;)

Has anyone checked out Townline Hatchery's website lately? I was just on it; it's nice to see it updated. But I was looking at their listing for 'Araucana - Ameraucana Strain'. Under product description it very clearly states that these are not Easter Eggers, but a pure bred Ameraucana. You think this is true? My two EE's from last year came from them, and they are definately not Ameraucana's. But I would like some real Ameraucana's... you think they changed their breeding stock maybe?

quick sketch maybe one or two of these Stacy? Supports the bottom and strap with ratchet straps or screw into tree?

That looks like it would work well! Thanks! And Barn Owls are absolutely no threat to a chicken. Almost all of their diet is comprised of rodents. Plus, they're actually quite small. The average barn owl weighs 16-21 ounces. All of my chickens are bigger than that! Great Horned Owls can take a chicken with no problem, though.

Honestly...I doubt it that they are purebred. Or they are, they're not that good. For instance, Meyers touts they have the real deal, but Ameraucana breeders aren't impressed with them, apparently.

But there is a purebred Ameraucana breeder in lower Michigan, John Blehm.

New website does look nice...but......the two descriptions contradict on another.

Upper description says: "Egg colors can include blue, green, pink, or olive drab."
While below it claims they are NOT Easter Eggers....which in my mind is a blatant untruth.

They used to cover their butts in the description....now......geez, I hate it when companies lie.

Good to know!

S osrry abou the chick losses, it's especially hard when it's your own pet that's the culprit. Just came in from the coop, and my extra MMCMurray Fayoumi cockrel is starting to crow! He's 28 days old today! It's too cute, he's tiny and thinks he's really hot stuff. Mary
