7th Pullet Egg Hatched!

I am amazed.....as I have read repeatedly that you should not attempt to hatch pullet eggs until they have been laying for at a least month.

A friend had a broody hen but no fertile eggs, so I gave her some from my senior flock just before Mr Rooster was rehomed and she really wanted some of the Wellsummer and EE pullet eggs I had.

I told her they may not develop, hatch or might be deformed, I was pretty sure they were fertile covered by my new Welsummer cockerel as I had seen him doing his duty well and checked the yolks for fertility out of curiosity.

2 of the EE eggs hatched, she'd been laying about 3 weeks/21 eggs.....and one of the Welsummer eggs hatched, she'd only been laying about 10 days/7 eggs.

Tiny little thing but appears to be hale and hearty running around with her hatch mates, markings indicate female too so double good news! Wellie chick is the smallest at the bottom of the pic.

I am officially at war. Yesterday I dispatched a large coon that was caught in a dog proof trap but evidently he has kinfolk hanging around. While gathering eggs tonight I found one Welsummer chick lying headless in the bottom of the cage and a second chick missing. So now I've several conibear traps set and one baited with the carcass.. Since they have demonstrated their preference for poultry I hope they come back for a second helping.

Grand Rapids is going to review the backyard hen ordinance this and next month. Word is it might be a more favorable outcome than last time.

Oh please get a stitch in that and wear gloves when dealing with barn cats in the future. It hurts just reading your post. Who knows what bacteria they're harboring too so yeah, get it looked at, PLEASE!!!!! I don't mean to sound condescending but the mother in me kicked in reading this. Please, please, please. I don't handle my barn cats at all, even the semi-friendly ones. I catch them in cages and hand them to professionals if they need close contact assistance. When I worm them I mix the med with the soft food and stand back with a squirt gun to discourage second helpings.

I hatched my FBCM rooster from Jerry's eggs. But I should have girls from elsewhere if I mean to breed them, don't you think? I guess I could get rid of him and try again for hens. *shrug*

Oh, I am definitely done w/helping the barn cats. I did not have a chance to get it looked at because my son was started online school. It stopped bleeding as the edges closed, thank goodness. I really wanted to get it looked at but now it's too late for stitches.
Rinse it thoroughly with water until no debris is left in cut, then rinse with hydrogen peroxide, let set a while...slather with triple antibiotic ointment with pain relief then bandage tightly.
I've had plenty of deep cuts and hands and fingers, if cleaned and bandaged promptly, no need for stitches....finger pad is easy to pressure bandage.

Tho if you haven't had a tetanus shot in less than ten years, go get one.
aart, I don't even recall my last shot of any kind.

Guess I am gonna have to get one. I hate those, they make my arm heavy for like 2 days.It stinks, but considering the alternative.......

Thanks for the advice, guys. I did clean it and goop and bandage after an hour of pressure holding. It was bleeding a bit this morning, but that soon stopped after more pressure holding. It is now wrapped snugly again. A lot less pain today. It is like a fish hook injury. It's been a looooong time since I've been this stupid. Probably a long healing time too, right, since it's used all the time.
Rubber Gloves are going to be my best friend for a while, it seems.

It should grow back together pretty well within a couple days if its clean and wrapped tight, just keep it wrapped. You can tell how much of it is going to grow together within a couple days, either it does it right away or it won't.

I've done stupid things too. Back when I was working at a frame shop I was told to salvage glass from broken frames that customers dropped, that were stacked on a table. So one night while I was sifting through the rubble looking for a chunk big enough, I sliced a chunk off my knuckle on my right thumb, down the to connective tissue. Even worse than sticking my hand in there was that I didn't tell anyone I did it because I was the only one working that night and I'm too chicken to put people out unless it was an absolute emergency and it really wasn't. But I do regret that I didn't get it stitched up and that I didn't hold management accountable for ordering me to do it.

Been there too. I was working as an apprentice in a sewing factory. my job was cutting out giant stocking patterns. I made the mistake of holding the material just right between my fingers and sliced right clean through the webbing of my thumb/index finger about 1/2' long. I could see blue and red. Ick. Yes, I passed out, when I woke up it was bandaged and I was sent home for the day. Nothing was ever said again. I was 17. It healed I don't remember getting stitches and today there is really no scar.
