Quote: Taking care of my mother, helping my old friend are just two examples of always trying to do the right thing and by doing so not only am I helping them but I'm benefitting myself. It sets an example that demonstrates to myh children that no matter the personal sacrifice we must take care of our own. In doing so perhaps should we need help others will stand up for us.
It all boils down to a demonstration of personal values like honesty and integrity. For example, I recently ordered some traps from a company and thought they had shorted me one trap. When I called them they immediately sent me another. Several days later I discovered that the error was mine. While the cost of the trap was only $8 I called them, apologized, and paid for the additional trap. They were amazed with my call. No one would have known except me and that alone was reason enough for my call.

Speaking of honesty, today I discovered that my bank debit card had been accessed by a computer generated hacking program to the tune of $1300. I immediately went to the bank to dispute the charges, filled out reams of paperwork, and now my bank assets are frozen while these charges are being investigated. The bank informed me that the process can take up to two weeks. Some of the charges were for $150 but most were for $3 or $4 and all occurred last night. The sooner charges are discovered the easier it is to get them removed. In this age of electronic banking this is a crime that is occurring with increasing regularity. I would advise everyone to check your banking and credit card balances daily.

Debit cards are especially prone to theft, more so than credit cards as the money is available instantly and stolen from a relatively weak individual, instead of a powerful corporation.

To help protect yourself if using debit cards:

1. Consider having a separate checking account that you use just for debit card transactions, and a different one for regular payments (such as utility or mortgage payments).

2. Transfer money into your checking account only as needed for what you spend. Do NOT set up automatic transfers into a debit card account.

3. Do not do automatic deposits (such as payroll checks) into a debit card account

4. Set up email or text alerts from your bank for debit card transactions - you will get emails when you use it as well, but so what?

5. NEVER click on a link in any email that appears to come from your bank , the FBI, or anyone else regarding your banking accounts

6. And as Opa, says, check your account at least daily

Glad to hear the finger is doing well! Have you heard of TNR for cats? When we bought our current home, it came with ten barn cats. That was almost a plague so I started to do some research and have learned a lot since then about responsibly controlling cat populations. The old timers, while charming with their burlap sacks, bricks or .22s have it all wrong.

I know I've gotten on this soap box before in this thread but it never hurts to repeat it. I'm not trying to be condescending. It's all about education. I've been seeing so much stray cat talk on the internet lately (not just here) so it's time for refresher. Best way to make sure they don't keep turning up is to get them fixed before turning them loose on the world. Cats and kittens should NEVER be given away for free. They should be sold with full round of shots but at the very least spayed/neutered. It's the only way you can possibly know for sure that YOU won't be part of the problem. You don't know what the person who takes them in is going to do with them and you could end up with their offspring back in your yard next year or the kittens being used for snake snacks if that bothers you. The statistics are sobering. FACT: Two cats can equal 11,000 cats in 5 years. There are a couple really good organizations in MI that do the spay/neuter on strays. They guide you through the process and even let you borrow equipment to do it. I use Carol's Ferals in W. MI. If you can't pay the vet fees, they can help or do it for free but they're non-profit so they need all the donations they can get. Consider paying the vet bill in full. I think it's around $45 per female cat (males are cheaper). TNR (trap/neuter/return) is the best way to control the stray population -not shooting them, as some folks in this thread might have you believe. Removing cats from your property only makes way for more to move in which just perpetuates the problem.

All of my barn cats came TNR and the kittens we just rehomed will all come back to be spayed (for a group discount w/Mama cat) in a few weeks. $$$saver for everyone. The other cat is the neighbor's and has been fixed already.

So, not populating the rest of the neighborhood females that may not be fixed.

I look so forward to your posts, Opa. You are a rare breed, but lately I see a resurgence of people willing and actually acting on doing the right thing even if no one would ever know.

All suggestions of debit vs credit are valid, I never use debit. Hopefully, it gets resolved sooner than later.
