Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Thanks, hopefully she bounces back. I'd have posted in the diseases section if there was actually anything to identify other than general lethargy. Any illness can cause a lethargic animal, so it isn't exactly helpful!

A special hen of mine is not feeling well. Which worries me, since once a chicken acts 'off' they're quite far gone.

She's getting some TLC in a crate inside the house. That way she doesn't have to work so hard to stay warm. But her eyes and nares are clear, no wheezing or snot production, she isn't eggbound, and has no loose stools. No sour crop, either. But in the coop she was just standing aside from the others, all fluffed up.

My polish is doing almost the exact same thing. When you pet her lots of feathers come out so I assume its molt

Hope she's ok. When they don't feel good, like us, they just kinda stand aside, eh?

All I can say is OMG! I may be getting another goat - a NG doe, oh no... I'm already too busy. Who wants to come out and do some building, lol!

Oh yeah, the chickens are doing great as chickens go. Moved the new meaties outside today.

So sorry for your hen; hope she's better. Sick chickens all resemble each other, no matter what the problem. Maybe worming? Dusting for parasites?

Stacy I hope she perks up with your added care.

I lost a favorite hen last night. A sweet bantam Salmon Faverolle named Lady. I guess I was expecting it, kind of. The end of July she was my hen who suffered from the fly strike. I took care of the problem but guessed there was something underlying it and that it was more of a symptom. The last two days she has been standing around fluffed out. I checked her out but besides heavy molting and being underweight there was nothing concrete. I just made sure no one messed with her and that she had food and water close. At night I put her in the nest box instead of on a roost. This morning she was gone. Just a guess of mine, but I think she had something going on somewhere in her reproductive tract and the stress of molting just did her in.

My DH got a new toy this weekend. A small 4 wheel drive tractor with bucket. I have had chickens for several years now and have never had help in coop cleaning. Yesterday both my son and DH helped me and shoveled all the bedding into the bucket and took it to a section of the garden that is done this year. Then they wanted to know what else I needed. So I had them bring a scoop of sand up to put in my run and in between the coop. They still wanted more chores but I didn't have anything else. I wasn't terribly excited about the tractor but it actually may make things easier for me, at least while it's still a toy and not yet work.

@ Snowflake:

Its the fanciers show at the birch run expo on Sat/Sun Oct 11/12.

Darn! I was reading through the posts thinking "please please be the right weekend". Unfortunately it's not. I'll be going to Birch Run on the 18th for DD's state honors choir audition & would have loved to stop while we were there. However, I really can't make the drive to Birch Run two weekends in a row.

Yahoo on the doe! So DS was drooling over the Flemish Giants at the fair Saturday night. We had to go out there to pick up our chickens to bring them home. Well, the bunnies & chickie-doodles are all in the same barn. He came running up to me "mom, mom! They have some of those huge bunnies here!". LOL. So we went together & looked at them. I told him, "Could you imagine having to take care of such large bunnies?" He said "I know... " but was all grin from ear to ear so I'm not sure if the message sank in.

What all are you building for the doe? Just a shelter, or fencing in more area, or what? DH is super busy here too & somewhere in there he needs to find time to build a decent rabbit hutch before winter! Or so he keeps telling me. My guess is that the current set up will just be moved to inside the barn for the winter.
