Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Finally got a pic of my new paint rooster that I picked up at Birch Run show. Thank you Mrs Abbott for my new boy.

Still need a name for him.
He looks like a Bubba to me.

Magazine?

Why can't we get one like this magazine that's available to those fine folk in Britain? I know we have "Backyard Poultry", but I'd much prefer something like this other. And of course we can get "Country Living" here in the U.S. but that's a joke, its more about how to make your house look country... in the city.

This is Britain's... the magazine is much much more than just chickens/poultry, with emphasis on small farms, different avenues to providing for your family - self sustainability, small livestock, gardening, bees, etc. Including news & current events relative to their area, new laws etc. I could still subscribe to it for $100/year. Yikes.

Who would like to start a US magazine with something like this just for me?

Maybe BYC will get their own "backyard farm" magazine out. (or do they?) I know they do a calendar, & the FB page... but I'd like a monthly subscription magazine in the mail!

I wonder if RaZ is in the hospital or in jail?? Sure don't want to be in his shoes. It's just insane what Garden City is doing. If you are monitoring this site.... You should all be ashamed of yourselves!!!! You are suppose to uphold the law, not make it a laughing stock!

There are several mags like that in the US....Grit is one, can't think the others names off hand, but they all are pretty much just gloss overs, articles that probably sell a ton of advertising because 'homesteading' is such a fad right now.

What about Mother Earth News? There are a ton of these type of mags out there but mostly they are filled with ads that make up a high percentage of weight. I have seen some from Harlan, IA under the names of Farm&Ranch (for families who love the land) and Country (the land and life we love). These two come from the same Publisher. They are filled with stories, past and present, but are mostly a walk down memory lane.

At Christmas time I always pick up the latest spin-off from M.E. News that has small how-to articles and use them as stocking stuffers. The only problem is it seems they now have the same articles as the previous year, just made over to look different.

Don't forget that Tractor Supply has a free mag called Out Here. Not sure how often it comes out but when I go I check near the door for the latest free copy. Free is good.

By the way, have you ever noticed the outrageous cost of magazines? If you have to have it get a subscription and look for multiple year contracts to save $.

@SillyChicken
Ok, your bow hunting spot is beautiful!! I'd never be able to hunt it cuz there is NO way I'm going up in a tree!!

Speaking of hunting, last night DH made it 2 to zip...he got a decent 8 pt (pic under my profile). At least we are halfway to having our freezer full, even if I haven't gotten one yet (normally I get one the first week...thought i haven't been out much...)

@RaZ
Hope you're feeling ok & you weren't met at the hospital by GCPD after your procedure.....

Some of my poor girls are really starting to look terrible...I think there are more feathers in the coop than on them; & I swear half of them fell out last night..

I was gonna mention Mother Earth News, too. I get email newsletters from them & love them (that's where I got that Spiced Apple Sweet Roll recipe;))

Anyone want an adorable Mille Fleur Booted Bantam cockerel for free? I just can't have these little toy breeds. My birds free range and we have barn cats. He fits right through the electric fence netting to complicate things. Today one of my barn cats braved the electronet to attempt to get to the little guy. Thankfully my standard breeds chased it out and no harm done. To be completely transparent, I got him for free as a friend for my quarantined black copper marans pullet that I first suspected had vitamin deficiency and then thought maybe Mareks. Never did find out what it was but she passed months ago (no one else has come down with anything remotely like it) and this little guy has been living with some leghorn pullets of similar age. But they'll be joining the big coop soon and I don't know what to do with him. He's a little small for eating, a mere nugget.

He's just nearing 12 weeks old. He makes some of the cutest noises.

I guess if no one is willing to risk it, I would then ask if anyone might have a bantam hen-friend for him, knowing they would be cooped for life (with a run of course). I just can't let these guys roam around here. It's far too dangerous. Bantams are definitely not my thing. I'm a utilitarian type person, for sure.

@ladyrsanti
OMG! He is SO cute! Wish I could take him just for the cute factor!
As it is I have 2 EE x BCM cockerels that I'm probably gonna have to get rid of (& they are gorgeous).

Last week was jail and the typographical errors that caused that little mess.
This week is something new just to keep things interesting. Again it has paperwork and protocols involved.

According to hospital policy, one has to have a family member present for out-patient procedures. They have to be there at the beginning and at the end. I walked the 1 1/2 blocks to the hospital and was going to walk home afterwards. Once they heard that, they went ape-poo. Hospital legal department was called in and ruled that the procedure could not take place without a family member present.

"Why", I ask. <Awkward pause> "In case something happens to you during the procedure", they said.
"Why", I ask again, "Is Uncle Bob going to rush in and save me if sometimes goes wrong?" Legal got mad and said to send me home. So I walked home. At least I got a valium out of it that they gave me beofre writing up the paperwork. Had a nice long napo on the the couch this afternoon. Now I'm tired.
