Speaking roosters... are some breeds better behaved than others? Im trying to convince DH we should add one. We have young children so thats always a concern. Wondering specifically about marans or legbar rooster attitude. I think either would add color to the egg basket in future generations.
Thanks

Hi Monstro, I have had a splash Maran, a Rhode Island Red, a splash Maran/Wyedotte and a Welsummer that all turned into very mean roo's. Can be different for someone else though. I currently have 2 roo's, a Sicilian buttercup & a White Chantecler. They will turn a year old this spring. They have been non aggressive since I got them. I haven't had any problems with them & my granddaughter so far. I will never completely trust any roo around my grandchildren without supervision. Spring will come & their hormones will be raging and I will see how they behave with me. If there is a problem, I will put them down. If you get a roo, please dont tolerate any bad behavior on their part and definitely don't breed them because those bad traits can get passed down to their chicks. Here's a picture of my roo's.

Hope this helps you out. Good luck in your venture :)

Generally it is recommended to have the lights come on early in the morning, rather than staying on late at night. That way the birds get a natural twilight, allowing them to find their roosts as the light fades, rather than sudden darkness. I have my light coming on right now at 4:30 am.

Always nice to have a well-behaved rooster.
Okay that’s interesting and it makes sense.

I finally have 2 that are awesome.
Congrats!
Good for you and thank you!

Buffs are generally a gentle breed. I have a feeling it also has a lot to do with how much they are handled when they are young. I believe the Roo I just acquired was handled and pampered quite a bit. The reason why I say that is because he has no problem with anyone picking him up. I had my grand kids over for the holidays and they were around the Rooster and he was as gentle as any of the hens.

we're over near napoleon...
Opa.... wish I have had the experience with offspring as you. I try to be this way for my parents for sure.. but unfortunately, my experience, as a step parent, has been just the opposite...
I found that age really helps, another boost to children's "respect" is when they have children. Rebellion against authority doesn't have to be taught, I think for most teenagers it comes naturally. The shock of being the hated authority changes the attitude of most kids.

the cold weather can go away any time now, i have been so spoiled by the mild winter. Frozen chicken waterer and rabbit water bottles and goat water...all suck!!!!
I thoroughly 2nd that.

Yep. Can you use the black rubber bowls for the rabbits? I do and I just throw them on the ground, stomp out the ice, and refill. Have the same for the goats but huge. I kick them and remove the ice chunks with a ice fishing skimmer. Nothing beats the heated 5 gallon waterer I got at FFH.
I made it almost 1/2 through last winter before getting tendon problems from stomping rubber bowls. A 5lb sledge works better and painlessly.

Sage is getting big!
Aww.

The chickenstock thread for attendance and pot-luck have been started.

The thread will try to be a one-stop place for information. Since the time for editing is limited, a member's page has also been created that can be edited at any time by the originator and someone he names to edit as well. It is set up so that the most important information is available at the top so you don't have to scroll through a lot of pages to find information.
If anyone wants to volunteer to help with the swap meet updates let me know and I can name you as a co-editor of the page.

Comments and questions are welcome, PM me if you like.
Cash bribes are also accepted.

Wow, have not been on here in a while(AGAIN! SHAME on me :smack ) and Chickenstock is right around the corner??? Boy, better start planning on that!

Ok Duck folks! Need a little help here. What duck breed is the QUIETEST??? I have 3 Pekins, and they are too noisy for me and my family. I always wanted Indian Runners, but are they QUIET??? Want ducks for eggs, great free-ranging quality and extra males and offspring for meat. Thanks for your input! I have a big urge to order chicks ad ducklings this year. I had held off the mail order bug for about two years now, and can't shake it off anymore! :barnie

Here is some pictures that my wife took last week.
I know that I had not posted any pictures of my birds in a long long long time!

Ah, Faverolle, on the top of my "want to try list." I think they look adorable and everything I've read says personalities to match.
