Stacy, are those Aracaunas? Beautiful chicks in any case.

Swampducks, could you boil over wood? It's super easy to build a pit out of cinder blocks and use an old pot. You just keep adding sap as it boils down. You can even let it cool over night and restart. Using propane is cost prohibitive for the amount I do. Although sometimes I might finish some over propane to the exact consistency.

Gotta love the weather. Baby goats any day now...

Love the bees, sorry about lost hives.

Welcom new people.

Are my chickens the only ones who drink dirty mud puddles instead of their fresh water?
Nope. My two flocks are making mudpies and eating the slop. Maybe they want the dirt for their gizzard, lol! Now my ducks on the other hand are going crazy in all this melt and want nothing more than to see their little pond revealed.

Got certified to be an NPIP tester and got me some chickens in striped pajamas!

I only wanted girls, but Mrs. Chickendad happened to have a spare rooster if I got two girls from her... :)

congrats on the certification and the birds are BEAUTIFUL!!,
Sure sign of spring, hatching chicks! But because it is still cold outside, they're keeping warm in the basement.

I also lost all my honeybees this winter. From dysentery. I was looking forward to golden, delicious honey. It tastes so amazing when it comes from your own bees... :(

love the chicks, sorry about the bees, how does that happen?

wish we had some green out back by the run. only green is over the septic tank in front and hens don't go there.
your blues are beakutiful

any one know any thing about microwaves? we need to replace ours, spent the whole day in front of the computer trying to decide what kind to get. and of course we need bisque to match the rest of the appliances. we had a Kenmore, lasted 4yrs. that is pretty bad in our opinion. so we are looking at different brands

We've thought about it, DH joined a maple syrup message board and a lot of people use wood but many of them talk about an ashy or smoke flavor to their syrup and he wants to avoid that. Do you find you have that problem?

As to propane costs, at least being hooked into the 250 gallon house tank is cheaper per gallon then filling up 20 pounders. We also heat the house with a wood stove so the propane in that tank lasts a long time as it's only used for the gas stove and dryer and hot water in summer.
