Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I'm going to have to find someone willing to come in and critter sit for me when I go in for surgery. That is still some time out as I go through the prep steps in the next 2 weeks.
Procedures have advanced quite a lot. The heart cath I'm getting next week will go through the wrist instead of the leg. The worst part is lining up a ride to the hospital.

Apparently, I have been naughty here on the thread. Can't for the life of me figured out what I said that would be offensive to anyone.

Anyone from the Holland / Zeeland / West Olive / Grand Haven area?

Also, I'm new to chicken keeping, and was wondering what you all do with your flock when you go away, like on vacation? Do you have someone come and take care of them a few times a day? If so, where do you find people who do that? I don't have any family in the area so need to look at my other options. Thanks!

Hey Welcome erinks.

I generally ask friends to take care of my chickens while I'm away. I tell them any eggs they find is theirs. I have also paid neighbor kids to watch them. That also gains you allies in the neighborhood in the case you are not quite within zoning laws.

My brother had a heart valve procedure done 3 years ago, and the incision for the operation was smaller than the drain tube incision. Just a few years prior it would have required opening the entire chest.

Maybe it's because I'm getting up in years, but takes less to make me happy than it used to. This morning discovering a large coon in one of the traps I've placed around my coops.

I'm downsizing my flock so I have a chicken coop I no longer need. It is a dual cage set up. I'll give it to anyone who will come and get it.
Sent you a PM

Have you seen that the Urban Livestock Workgroup (ULW) has released their recommendation?

Basically it says let local governments decide. The panels met in secret five times since last fall. There were only two members that actually own livestock. The others were hand picked from the MML, MiFB and commercial interests. There was no way that MDARD was going to let this panel recommend allowing for urban livestock.

There is no telling what Senator Hune will do in Lansing. But he gets a lot of financial assistance from the Farm Bureau.

We don't have any family in town either. Luckily, our neighbors got chickens right after we did, so we trade off on watching them. However, I am curious about the automatic chicken door. Anyone else have this? I'm afraid if pine shavings would get in the way of it closing? I don't know how strong it is...

With our three in the brooder, we are at neighborhood maximum capacity. It took all my strength not to leave with more chicks and DUCKS at TSC last night...

My buff hasn't laid in probably three weeks. She stopped randomly and goes to her nesting box like she wants to. I don't know if she's getting regulated to the longer hours or if something is wrong. She's eating/drinking normal and her poo/vent is fine. :: SIGH :: Maybe she's just waiting for Spring, too.

i saw a different door that had really reviews on it here on BYC, it has the solar power option and a light sensor option...so it opens at dawn and closes at dusk and some other options. i will see if i can find it.

The ones i saw the good review on were the Pullet-shut automatic door. i guess people are raving about it being the best and really good, wont squish chickens etc.

I just installed the"pullet shut"door a few weeks ago. Not sure why I waited so long too purchase it.lol. so far I love it:):) got it mostly so when we go weekend camping I don't have to worry if they are closed up for the night and out in the morning. But sure has been nice to sleep in a few mornings too:):)

Does anyone know of any show quality Silkie or D'Uccle breeders in Michigan? Preferably as close to Muskegon area as possible (I live in Ravenna), but could probably drive an hour or two out of the way if needed. I have a full grown blue silkie roo and I need some girls for him, and then I need one D'uccle rooster as well. My beautiful frizzled D'uccle roo died this morning, never got the chance to get more frizzles out of him :(
