Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

If you want to see well-cared for birds at a bird get-together, you should come to Chickenstock. Although some folks will bring birds only if there is a buyer, so there is lots of bird-selling and trading action in the weeks before. If you want to check out the Chickenstock thread, the link in in my or Raz's sig lines.

I built my first coop from pallets, a few (maybe 5 or 6) pieces of plywood, and leftover siding and shingles i got from the habitat for humanity re-store....I could house about 8 birds there...so you would have to go a little bigger....I had my nest boxes inside, and the whole thing cost about $150. I can share pictures if you want. I got the door from the re-store too. My current duck coop will house about 15 birds (I have 9 in there now) and cost about $60...but I already had some of the 2x4's and then I bought 2 culls. I can share pics of that too if interested.

My CX always free ranged great, but I had them with some pullets so they just followed them around...they were actually very laid back and sweet.

I was thinking you were near me too...call your local feed store...mine is putting in two more orders so I'll be ordering from there. :)

Nice finds! Wish I could have met you guys! I didn't end up going...maybe next time...although it sounds like a bit of a flop. :p

Tomorrow is candling day! Getting our garden put in little by little (no tiller...the hand one got left at our old house and no money for a roto-tiller so we're going old school clearing grass with a shovel, hoeing the soil, then top dressing...we'll see how it goes. Also got a fence panel put up to act as a trellis for our grapes...and got some clean-up done...slowly but surely it's coming together! :)

Idk if it was a flop by most peoples standards. I got there at 8am and people were flowing out with birds already. There was a trio of chocolate bantams I was going to get too but when I went back, some other lady was stuffing them into her box! I just missed getting them! there were tons of pea fowl, pigeons, a few quail, quail eggs, ducks and duck eggs. There were some really cool LF chicken pairs and then there were random roosters, babies, pullets and sr hatches. there were a few repulsive bunches of de-beaked and really raggedy birds which I gave a wide birth to as soon as I saw them. Cutler's had some nice stuff, I bought the 2011 ABA book and some leg bands.
It was my first auction, I didn't intend to join in but when I saw that disker, I had to! It took until almost 5 o'clock to get to it, but it was worth the wait and I had a blast!

Sorry you have to be breaking your back like that!
Oh yah, when I got home, these people I'd been helping with an IT or EYP chicken asked me to take her so they brought her over - beautiful bird, I hope I can save her.

Here she is, her name is Dottie (for now) She's a LF GLW. I'm tube feeding her bc she isn't doing much on her own. So, I'm crazy! I have her in the bathroom, the three new birds in the garage, 7- 2 week old bantams in the brooder in the kitchen and a flock of 17 out in the coop! Biosecurity nightmare! I love my birds!

What year is it?!
I'm mad for the old 1975-1986 100 and 200 series lawn and garden tractors, they are the bomb!!
I've had a '79 214(rebuilt  the Kohler motor once to.30 over and it's now the parts tractor) and an '86 216.
Use them to mow, throw snow and have a dump cart too. They are little tanks and can last forever if you've got some mechanical skills!

I love our old JD! A JD 175. Bought it last year, we're the second owner. Came with a dump trailer and seed spreader. The guy even had the original owners manual and all service records to go with it. Could use new blades but thats it. Started right up after sitting the winter.

Edit: not sure on the double quote thing. "wannahomestead" was suppose to be in there also

You're not crazy! Knowing how to tube feed is an important skill! And it can mean the difference between recovery and death, since it means the bird can be nourished and rehydrated!

...I actually had to tube feed a bird tonight. She (I think she is a she, young Araucana can be so hard to sex) is isolated from the rest of the birds (in my bathroom in a carrier, it is warm and quiet there) when she started acting off. She is lethargic, will not eat or drink, and stands for short periods only. Not sure if the not standing thing is due to weakness or some other pathological problem going on. So hopefully both our birds recover with some TLC!

TY! I hope so too! EE roos have a lot of green in thier tails often times, and are tricolored. For example: White hackles, brick red back, black/green sickles. There are so many combos! Hens usually have a nice blended coloration from head to tail, not patchworky like a roo. have you checked for spongy abdomen, bruising of the body, parasites? what color/consistency of poop?

justplainbatty and birdman55 (his GF was hiding :p ) So, who all went to the Imlay City bird sale? I was able to find @birdman55 as you see, but didn't know who else to look for. I ended up with a porcelain D'Ullce and a pair of self blue? oeg, the guy just said "blue"bantams. What did you all get? this is China I have not named these two yet. I ended up staying all day for the auction. I got a few little things but then, I got a new toy! The first year I lived here, I tried to turn a new garden with just a tiller. As you can imagine, it didn't work out that well, especially with a clay base. I got a disker, just perfect for my Kioti! We turned the first layer over yesterday and will go deeper Thursday. I'll have a much better planting this time. :)
I saw ya! And seen the birds ya bought. :) Lol and I also know the lady in the pic behind you you. She owns star bright farm

i dont think it was a flop the swap....just when i got there the selection was pretty beat up....and im sure there was alot nicer birds before 9am that were there...also its cool on that last pic....cause if you look on the few i posted from the show...those birds where in one of the pics...from what i was told buy the old vp of the mbgba there was 76 sellers there and that was a good turnout for them in imlay...next swap i will have to get there super early....so i can see the nicer stock...seems like they sell out really quick....anyways have a great day everyone...

I'm sorry, that doesn't look like Michelle, from Star Bright Farm. Unless there's another. Michelle was just at my house yesterday and that's not her!
