Ya really don't need layer if you aren't planning on lighting the crap out of them all winter. Just provide the oyster shell and they'll eat it as needed...

I haven't had my birds on layer feed at all since January and so many decided to have chicks. I just get the multiflock and free choice oyster shell. So far so good.

While many folks feed Flock Raiser with free choice oyster shell, if your flock is predominately laying hens then I would strongly suggest you make the switch to layer. It contains many other things besides just calcium and your birds will fair much better on it.

If lived in this house for 34 years without any problems until last fall. Someone took a 5 gallon can of gasoline that I had left sitting in front of my shop. Then today when Hope's youngest son came over in noticed her gas tank door was open and the gas cap was lying on the ground. To add insult to the injury of siphoning off $30 worth of gas, they deflate the tires on the right side of the vehicle. I guess this was to make sure they got as much gas as possible. Normally she parks in the garage but Friday night she just parked in front of the garage. I think that in addition to my eggs for sale sign I need one that states a crazy old man with several loaded guns at the readyresides within.

I am in search of a Silver Sebright rooster....my pullets miss their little man (Zac passed away unexpectedly last week without any signs of illness) and my daughter is heartbroken

Does anyone have knowledge of someone with extra roosters?? Thanks for any and all leads

Unfortunately, the poor economy seems to be bringing out the worst in people when they become desperate. It is sad that when challenged, some people choose to take the dishonorable route. Don't let it change who you are and how you view or treat people. Be wise to protect yourself, but don't change who you are.

Weather was really nice most of the day. It rained a bit this morning and then got nice and it rained again this evening. Chickens got out for some free ranging time.
Someone walked into our garage in broad daylight and took my DH's GPS and i pod out of his truck. The garage door is open a lot cuz the chickens like to go in when it's windy, cold, etc. I like to keep it open for the chickens to run in in case of a hawk. The person didn't take mine, maybe cuz the dogs were barking. Me? I just told them to shut up, lol. Next time I'll listen to them! I now lock up my car.
I have so many naked chickens. DH said one looked like she was ready for the stew pot. We got 3 eggs today, 1 yesterday. Pretty sad.

Me too at 2:30 in the morning! I went to let the dog out and when I open the door, I was hit by a warm breeze.

Huh, don't need the jacket after all!

But on the way to work I drove into a downpour, and had to turn on the windshield wipers on high.

Everyone here on the farm is doing fine. Chickens are being chickens free ranging. Nothing new with them. lol
I am still not able to get Bella (the cow) bred.

But still getting lots of milk from her now, as I have been putting her calf in my chicken coop at night,. I get about a gallon of milk each morning. Raw milk is sooo good!

Oh! I think that the most coolest thing that has happened to me yet, is that one of the guy that works at the of of the farms that I now works, use to own Bella before he sold her to a guy, who then sold her to me! He stills have Bella's mother and knows when Bella was born! He wants to see how Bella looks now, and said that I can see Bella's mother too! Her name is Bonnie, a pure Guernsey. What a small world! And he also have a herd of Lowline Angus(he is selling most of them due to high hay prices) and a Lowline Bull had bred Bella last year, and that resulted Maybelle, so Maybelle is half Lowline, and 1/4 standard Angus and 1/4 Guernsey. That is an interesting mix. lol I would say that she looks more like her dad the lowline.

That's awesome that you found her mom and get to meet her!!! I have never had raw milk but have wanted to try it...maybe one day we'll have a dairy cow.

Even though it is mild outside, my BLA hasn't wanted to leave the coop since she went into heavy moult. She has also been mopey since the duck flew south. I was hoping to find a bantam pullet or two at FF to keep her company, but all were being sold as trios.

I just bought two Bantam Cochin pullet's for $3 a piece from a lady in Clifford. She was very nice. I don't know much about chickens yet, but they seem happy and healthy and settled right in...she had some chicks that were only a few days old too...The ad said Cochins, then she was calling them Frizzles when we got there, in the e-mail she said Frizzle Cochins, and well...I don't know enough about chickens yet to know what the difference, if any, is...but they are super cute, and what I wanted...one is kind of a silvery gray and one is black and white with a little gray...she had a cute young roo too but since I'm new to chickens I didn't want to go there just yet!!! I'm already in love with them though so I can definitely see the possibility of a roo in our future! lol!

Thanks so much for this Nova!!! I just bought a HUGE (well huge to me! lol!) bag of Flock Raiser, not knowing that my female duck wouldn't be around much longer, and she wasn't laying yet because she was only 3 months old...well, I wasn't quite expecting that I would have 5 chickens (3 that are laying) and 3 ducks now, so I thought the flock raiser was fine for my duck! lol! I figured I would buy layer pellets next time I buy food but I thought they would probably do ok with the flock raiser and free choice oyster shell until then, so I'm glad to hear your birds seem to be doing well on that!

I think I'm suffering from a weird case of chicken math...lol...I really wanted buff brahma's (or gold laced buff brahma's I think they're called) but I couldn't find anyone that had any this time of year, so I thought...well, buff orpington's look nice, and some say they are relatively friendly (I just want them chilled enough that I can go about my business without an issue from them)...well, I couldn't find any of them very local either...then I REALLY wanted Swedish Flower Hens...but yeah, not available, and NOT in the budget...so I saw a couple people had ISA browns, and I heard they were relatively docile and decent layers, but didn't have a lot of time to do research...but found a local lady with young laying hens for $5 a piece...she also had some EE's (she said they were Ameracauna's, but I'm pretty sure she' not) ...I've admired my dad's for awhile, but I just heard they were skittish and couldn't decide ...but I bit the bullet remembering how much I love seeing their eggs, and told her I wanted 2 ISA's and the 1 EE and that I also wanted two banty Cochins (THEY ARE THE CUTEST THINGS!!!)...well...I get there and she has the one ISA (who is taller and less round than I was expecting,) and then a bird that she said is the Amerecauna but has completely different coloring than I'm used to (she is really pretty though...very light feathers with some pale pastels throughout) and then another brown chicken with black in her tail...and I'm thinking...hmmm...why does that brown one look different when they are supposed to be the same breed...well she tells me Oh, I gave you 1 ISA 1 Amerecauna, and 1 New Hampshire, cause she looked real good...um...ok, she was really a sweet lady and takes care of someone disabled...don't know if it's her husband or dad or what, just saw a wheel chair and lift and such, and then she had been dealing with a sick dog all morning as well, so I said ok, and thought if she said she looks good I'm sure there's a reason so I'll just go with it! lol!!! THEN I go to pick out my Cochins...and I was a little sad because they were all grays and blacks with white...and there was one with tan in it...that was a roo though...anyways....they were still super cute and I just love them so I picked out two and I already want more. I also got to see a Porcelain (Is that the same as a Porcelain D'Uccle?) She had a breeding pair and they are just GORGEOUS!!! I think if she hatches out chicks in the spring I might have to get a few! lol! Soo...if you read all that you are a saint, and my journey to originally (back when I started reading and researching) get 3 brahma girls, somehow turned into me getting 3 ducks, and 5 chickens...none of which are Brahma's!!!! lol!
