Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Hello!
I have not had much luck in rehomeing some of my chickens.

Do any of you know of a place who takes unwanted roosters and hens that is more of a "no kill" environment. Id really like to rehome some of my chickens to a place where they will be treated as pets and just used for their eggs rather than their meat. Or anyone who is looking to breed since I have 2 roosters in the mix.

I currently own a little over 15 chickens. Some of the chicks I had this year turned out to be roosters. I have 4 in total that id like to give away.

2 roos
2 hens
the same age about a few months old.

Been too busy...son got married Saturday on North Muskegon State Park Beach and the reception was in my barn. The tent we rented was circus size (for over 200 folks) and the restrooms were on a trailer, running water and A/C. So I'm now officially broke, lol!

Back on BYC though and tried to scan the back pages. Welcome to the new folks. Well, back to work on Staple Station (the farm)...

Quote: You mean the thermocube?
Well, yes, I didn't want the aquarium heater running(set at it's lowest 68F) if the ambient temp was above 45F(thermocube's high limit).
...and I had a night light(shaded with just a hole to let light out) plugged into it that served as an indicator that the power was on or off, I can see it from inside my house.

You will have a tough time rehoming extra cockerels, I'm sorry to say...unless you are willing for someone to process them. I have a man that I call when I have extra cockerels; he dispatches them humanely and has many years of experience doing so in a quick manner so as not to unduly upset the birds. It's a part of having chickens, unfortunately. You may find someone who SAYS they will let them run free on their farm, but 99% of the time, they're just saying that to make you feel better. Sorry! As for the pullets, though, you should be able to find someone who will take them - have your put an add on Craigslist?

The chicks that were hatched out by the co-moms are now 7 weeks old. While they still hang around with the hens, the hens are leaving them alone more often. For example, when I go out they come running and immediately squat.
So the question is; how long after hatching chicks do hens begin to lay again?
