Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

That is an awesome brooder. Wow.
Thank you!
The original plan, was to use it for the chicks now, and then put it in the run for future use to keep new babies separate from grown hens, but we decided to build the run in a way that it can be sectioned off if need it, so we no longer need a separate coop.
I hope I didn't break any rules by posting this here.

Well Boots has been setting for 4 days straight on her clutch of 5 eggs. I hope she hatches some of what she's setting on for her sake. Now Oscar my Icelandic hen has decided she wants to set on eggs too. I finally fessed up and told hubby last night when we were both outside and he heard me cussing when Oscar bit Me!(I took her eggs away to see if it's a fluke or if she'll be back on a new clutch today) He's not too happy. I promised him I would sell all of the chicks that hatch. I'm at capacity now I deff don't need to keep any. I'm secretly jumping with joy that I have hens wanting to set on eggs. I had to share with everyone on here because everyone else just looks at me like I'm nuts.

I'm attempting to compost yet again this year. I'm a failure every time. I follow the directions, and nothing happens to my pile for like 2 years. Then it sorta looks like compost. I have a chicken wire "cage" made that's 3ft by 6ft with a divider. I later my leaves and veggie waste, egg shells, and coffee ground. Wet it down a bit between layers. Turn it at least once a week (by removing the divider and shoveling it to the other side). Oh well. We'll see. Maybe it'll work this time.

I have eggs coming out my ears and no one to buy them. I'm about to cook 6 or 7 dozen and feed them back to the birds.

Yesterday madness struck, and I bought an incubator! Crazy, right? I'm getting it up and running today, and then we'll see. Chantecler and bantam eggs to go in tomorrow if it's doing well. Dry incubation? Any thoughts? I'm much happier with broody hens, but only one so far this spring. And my major egg buyer fizzled out too, so why more chickens? Guess it's another crazy chicken lady!?! Mary

Throw in dirt. And earthworms. Give those yummy microscopic organisms a jump start.

In a few weeks, once the hen house outside is done, I'll be getting rid of the coop and run that I have in my basement, I thought I'd ask you guys before putting an ad on Craigslist

We bought it 6 weeks ago, to keep the baby chicks wile we build their permanent outdoor home. We paid 300, we'll be asking half price...the coop has never been used, the chicks only use the run..if interested pm me
Nice coop, you may want to keep it
. It is very nice to have an extra coop if a hen goes broody, I have a few extra and as soon as a hen goes broody I can put her in one of the extras and keep her separated so the other hens don't keep trying to lay eggs under her and she doesnt go out for a bite to eat and come back in and sit on another grope of eggs.

Welcome to Mi.BYC
You may be right. It is the first street west of the schools and before cemetery hill. It has been over 40 years ago though. Egad, I am feeling old. Haha. I had only returned back to my home state Michigan 10 years ago. Never thought I would be having my own chickens let alone, ducks! My hubby cannot say no to our grandsons...so I am hoping I can avoid the chicken mathl
Welcome to Mi. BYC and chicken math is VERY contagious, those little fuzzy things are so cute, and there are so many beautiful breeds

got the spring cleaning done in the coop today, took all the roosts outside for a good scrubbing with bleach and Dawn, then let them dry in the sun. clean everything out of the coop and scrub down and poo on walls, then put everything back with fresh bedding, takes most of the day but looks and smells so good when it is done.

Welcome to all the new bee's, I haven't posted for a while, Also got the grass cut for the first time this spring.

I have some chicken tractors that need new bottom posts top is pvc with chicken wire attached. but the bottom was wood and has rotted out. they are about 8 ft by 4ft. we had 4x4 boxs on the ends those are no longer on thought I had some pics on the sight but I don't see them. Any how if any one wants the pvc and chicken wire you may have it for free. We live North of GR, in Belding.

My "babies" have access to the run with the big girls now. They got pecked at a bit at first and now they mainly only venture out as a pack in the later evening. Is that pretty normal?
