Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

The ugly truth is that comradeship has been lost. I remember growing up with my adopted mom cooking like there was a party but in reality, she always took some to neighbors and there was always left for someone that needed. Today, we have changed to be more self sufficient and grab a McD on the way home and call it a day. I honestly do not eat vegetables because I never developed a taste for them and a few years back tried a salad and almost died. It was horrible. However, I do know how to make salads, cook vegetables and grow them too. I grow them not because I like them nor eat them but I always give to neighbors because I know they do. For me the satisfaction of putting a seed on the ground and then harvest vegetables, that is my thing.
I am fairly new to Michigan and would never be a true Michigander. However, I have learned to can things and I love it. It is time consuming but I enjoy it. I have made apple-cinnamon jam and jelly and give them away, especially the ladies at the bank loved them. I have made blueberry jam as well and give them away. I even made tomato sauce, which it was very time consuming and send some to my sister in Puerto Rico and friends in Florida. I used some to cook with.
I like growing peppers, onions and garlic because I make "sofrito" with them. ( that is the only way I can have them in my meal)

It's been 6 years that I have been in Michigan and yet been able to grow cilantro or culantro - https://www.seriouseats.com/2019/10/what-is-culantro.html

I even brought seeds directly from Puerto Rico and bought directly from Vietnam with no luck.

Neighbors are to be the closest besides family. My children are all grown up and in different states, so all I have are my neighbors or people from church. We have let this technology take over our lives in a manner that we cannot control it. I had a facebook account years ago when I was an antique seller on ebay and other platforms. I had over 15k followers because I always search for the best antiques. However, 4 yrs ago, I closed it down and I do not even miss it. This is the closest to internet I have been in years. Yet, I come early if I have nowhere to go and then jet out and do my things. Yesterday tried in my cell but my cell is too small. I think that we the people that care for animals and growing our gardens are more inclined to people. I have no clue how this will be fixed but I think we need to continue to be close to each other and maintain our humanity as much as we can.
I am loving every minute that I come and able to chat and read about all of what is going on in y our lives. This is not facebook to make yourself look better. You guys are the real deal. We help each other in any way we can. This is my sisterhood, brotherhood place. I thank you all; Michelle, Sally, Mary, Arrt and many more for being such a wonderful extended family for each other.
But I think I have rambled enough this morning, so, what's for lunch ladies?

Good Morning Everyone! Supposed to be a high of 67 here today :celebrateDucks are doing well and getting very big. They are almost out of their Mazuri waterfowl starter food and curious if I should buy another bag or switch them over to something else for more adult ducks. They are 2 and a half weeks old.
Riss, we must be in Michigan because I will not see past 58 today, 😭

I don't see an alternate feed on the bag but the type I'm using currently is Mazuri Exotic Animal Nutrition. They are also on chick grit and I feed them minnows in the pool they play in. Don't know if there was a certain type of brand anyone would recommend that they used that worked great.

About feed for ducklings; what does the feed bag say, and what does your alternative feed choice say on the bag? And can you buy fresh feed, by mill dates, in your preferred feeds?
Mary
Hey Riss and Folly, feed for ducks? Never heard of that. My mom always fed them left over rice in water to soften it more and they eat all the bugs in the yard and they were pretty taste to say the least. I am just being inquisitive or nosy or snoopy, 🤔

I always thought about giving them some rice. Did she just give them any kind of rice or did it not matter?

Thanks Sally, I have not gotten up there yet. sounds like a nice place.
Beautiful day today, Rain and snow are going to be hard to take after these nice sunny days.
I think I have taken care of the hawk problem, got all the breaks in my overhead netting zip tied, now at least the girls can go out in the run. For a month or more they were cooped up inside the coop, Still don't dare let the free range as he flies over daily looking for another chicken dinner. Coop is smelly now so I will have to get it cleaned out soon.
Have a good day every one.
