Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Congrats, Theron. How are eggs judged?

I don't usually bag the clippings when I mowed but I did today. I dumped the bag in the run and the hens are enjoying a fresh green lawn salad.
I am not really sure how the eggs were judged because I had to be at band practice.
Farmerboy - I am glad Micah's parents were able to have a little time with him. I will keep your family in my prayers.

Theron - congratulations on the ribbons. I know the work involved, my son takes 10 birds next week for our fair and I may end up taking more.

I feel like I have gone in circles today and not really accomplished anything. I had a fight between two young roosters. A short bantam Cochin and a lanky standard polish. They were hysterical! The would start jumping at each other and end up the Cochin standing between the polish's legs and both couldn't find each other so they would just stand there. Then one would move and they would see each other again and start it back up. It didn't appear too serious but I ended up breaking it up and putting them in two different places. I am down to only 3 that are lacking names now but I can't really tell them apart yet so I want to wait a little longer.

For those of you who have showed birds: How do you get a white bird clean? I know in the past some of the white feathers have looked stained. Can you get them white again? My son's Cochin for showmanship is white and has a few spots on her chest. They are both doing great practicing everyday. When he goes to tell about cochins he is supposed to say they make very good brooders. Every time instead he has said they are really good hatchers. He also points out the feathers, did you know they have an axle feather? I try not giggle sometimes with what comes out his mouth.
We use Dawn dishsoap in the water about a week before the show (make sure to rinse well). This gives the birds a chance to return their natural oils. We then keep them on bedding that gets cleaned twice a day.
Morning everyone. Very foggy here, but clearing up.
Yesterday at 1:40 am, Micah, my nephew was born. Feet first and very fast.
He is the most beautiful baby that I have ever seen.
He weighed 3 pounds and 4 oz.
He also went to heaven at 2:20 am, 10 minutes before us kids got there. My parents were already there.

So sorry for your loss Daron.

Theron,

Congrats on your wins! I wanted to tell you that I learned my lesson on ordering serama eggs on ebay- none of those were fertile that I got. That will teach me- and next time, I will definitely get them from you.

I have a question for you smart peoples...
my favorite blanket EVER- my soft snuggly sherpa blanket isnt so soft and snuggly anymore. Its actually sort of scratchy now. Do you know if there is any way to restore its once soft and fluffy fleeciness? Or,

is it time to ask for a new one for Christmas and put this one in the dog blanket bag? *sigh* I love my blanket. And its perfect for chilly mornings sitting at the computer. I think its just been washed and dried too many times.

Kim, I'm not sure what you could do to fix a blanket that's no longer soft and cuddly. I know I once had the same problem with a couple of wives.

ha ha ....I guess replacing that which is no longer soft and cuddly is the way to go, then, Sam? hahaha...

:( but I really love my blanket.

It's been a while since I posted any progress on my coop project. It still is a work in progress (isn't it always, with everything it seems!) Just thought I'd share.

This is the way it looked back in May

And now it looks like this

And my newest additions to the "Flock"

The work is never done though. The peas will have housing on the back side with the roof being extended out another 10' with additional run space for them. The left side of the build will have a similar run space for the Araucanas I ordered, which I still am waiting on.

Bretheren, your coop is beautiful, good job.

Opa!!

You are so bad.

You can try brushing the blanket with a pet brush, the kind with little wires that look like a wool card - forget what they are called. Slicker brush?

Morning all! It was such a beautiful morning that I took some pictures while doing my chores.
