Pictures of the new roof!

It is so much lighter in the run now.

We had planned to get clear panels, but this is what Menards had, so we went with it. I think it'll be better than clear when it gets to next spring/summer. I'll probably have to put some kind of shade cloth in there.

I realize I need another horizontal support, so I'll be putting that in this week. There won't be much left of that pallet when I get done!

I also have enough of the polycarbonate left over to make a windbreak for the west side. Then I can use the shower curtains for the west side of the run extension. I'll put heavy duty tarps over the top of the run extension. Right now it's chicken wire, soon to be covered with leaves, so it'll hold a lot of snow.

That roof is not as easy to reach, but I can broom the snow off.

I am just letting you know that Phoebe is no longer. She had a good short life. I had to let her go and I am so heart broken. I really love that rebel chicken. Since small she will crawl up on my shoulder, was the queen of the flock, was fiesty, but the xlarge egg layer, loving and patient at night to get her snack. I sure going to miss her.
I'm so sorry 😢

I'm starting to work through that unpleasant fall task of culling the flock for the winter. One cockerel and an older hen who has never walked normally and now has been bullied by the other birds went over the weekend. If I can ID the egg eater(s), they will be next. I still need to cull 2 roosters, and put the youngsters in the main coop, which I don't want to do until the egg issue is resolved. Shade cloth came off yesterday, and I'll start hauling chips to the run this week.

It's hard, hate it too. And we have a few too many birds for the winter, so will have to take steps to fix the situation also.
Three inches of rain, AGAIN! And more rain coming today, I guess. Fewer mosquitoes, at least this last weekend, probably won't continue.
A co-worker's husband, who has other health issues, has West Nile and another mosquito borne illness, in the hospital. Sad news, for sure.
And three unvaccinated horses, not so far from us, dead of West Nile very recently.
Mosquitoes are the pits!
Mary
Edited to add that those three horses died of Eastern , not West Nile encephalitis. Not better, for sure. And the man I mentioned has both West Nile and Jamestown Valley virus.

Hi, I’m new to the MI thread. I’ve lived here since marrying my husband in 2001. I’ve had chickens going on three years now and still feel like a newbie. This past summer we let two of our broody hens raise chicks. They’ve been such a joy to watch grow. Here’s a pic of two of my 4 month old roos. View attachment 2851091
The white one looks just like my Phoebe. Welcome to this thread, you will love it here!
