Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

My first layer had her comb get really big about a week before she started to lay. I don't know about the vent, I never checked. But she made the weirdest noises ever, I thought she was trying to crow. Later i learned that is the egg song. How exciting!!
She's done that a few times now. I'll be out working in the garden, ba ba bakawk... Nothing, just chickens in the coop doing who knows what. And an overly excited chicken keeper wondering what the commotion was about. LOL

Clearly you just haven’t had good guac!
That might very well be true. I have never had freshly made, as I wouldn't make it for DH or me. Neither of us like it. Neither of us like avocado.

What you've described does sound good though.

I need to make homemade guac for a friend of mine who loves it. Then she can take it home if I don't become a convert.

You should. Ultimately it’s not that expensive, particularly if you’ve already got the spices in the cupboard.

Pro tips for getting prime avocados. Give them a little squeeze, if they’re hard, not ripe enough. If they’re slightly pliable, pop out the stem. Look inside. Solid green? Perfect. Little brown spots? That’s what it’ll look like inside too.

Also, depending on company I’ll add a bit of chili powder and cayenne, if people are good with a little heat…

Try it on grilled pork chops. Fantastic.

I'd heard about the squeeze tip, but not the peeking under the stem. I'm not sure I've ever seen a stem on one, though. If the stem is already gone, would the flesh have oxidized there and already turned brown?

Most likely, you’ve seen them with the stem on. It’s not a long stem like most fruits (think apples, peaches, pears). It’s just a little nub. Actually, if you pop it out to look, you can just kinda push it back in, and it’ll keep it from oxidizing.

But yes, if someone has tried this and failed to put the stem/nub back in, it’ll brown up and won’t be useful for gauging the ripeness of the avocado.
