Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Happy New Year everyone.

Glad to see the Pheasant is back, he has obviously found a place to call home. Of all the game birds out there they are tied with the wood duck in beauty for me. After growing up hunting pheasants, they will do just fine here as long as they have a food source and shelter. The biggest problem that I see in MI is a lack of thick tall grass that they seem to really like/need for shelter near a food source. Like Opa said farming practices are changing and the habitat they require no longer exist or is hard to find in MI. They are thriving in the cold and snow of the Dakota's because of the CRP.

Up eating monkey bread and having the first pot of coffee of 2013. I hope everyone has a happy and successful New Year.

Went to work yesterday, just a normal day. Not quite. Boss wasn't too happy with some of the other departments. He switched me. Chickens love it - salad, tomatoes, squash, parsley, cabbage, cucumber, apples, blueberries, cranberries, grapes.. Talk about a position with benefits!

Good Morning and Happy New Year!!!

Anybody else have chickens that are not big on scraps? I have tried apple peeling, potatoe peelins, celery, bread, cucumber, and tons of other stuff and most won't even look at it!! What is wrong with my chickens?????

potato peels are bad bad bad for chickens if I remember the treat chart sticky correctly. would probably be good to check that.

I found with mine that it was really hit and miss when they would eat the veggie scraps this past summer. Some days they ate like they weren't going to be fed ever again, and other days the just looked at the scraps, looked at me, looked at the scraps, and walked away.

Hope everyone had a wonderful and safe new years eve!! DH and I BOTH have the day off today (shocking!) so I think we'll take the Christmas tree down, and maybe go out to lunch or something.

Peelings? That ain't no treat! Mine won't eat celery. I cut cukes in half lengthwise and they love it. Now, mac n cheese is their favorite. Love wheat bread. Go to the discount bread store and stock up. Rice, noodles, meat scraps, tomatoes.... they love it. Pizza! Keep trying different things, and keep trying. It's like a kid who refuses new things, but keep on putting in front of them and they'll start pecking at it.

Quick question about worming. I wormed the new girls last Thursday with ivermectin. Do I need to repeat again after 2 weeks? Or is that only when you use wazine (and then dose with ivermectin 2 weeks later)? I've run a few searches, checked fuzzy's notes and can't find the answer to this!

(I don't know for sure if they had worms, it was more of a preventative treatment type of thing, and to protect my current flock.)

My chickens are not keen on scraps, or treats. Including cracked corn and chicken scratch...I've tried anything and everything..Hubby is always saving me bread for them, and they never touch it. The only treat they like is the square treats you can find made for the wildbird feeders, they'll peck on those for a couple days.

Now my mom has always given hers treats, even as chicks/teenagers...and they are crazy for them, which is kid of cool becuase everyone is tamer..as soon as you go in the coop the chickens run up and see if you have anything for them, and some will eat out of your hands...Or fly up and try to steal your wedding ring. =)

Typically worming is done a second time to stop all stages of the worms life cycle. You might kill the worms first time, but not their eggs.
