Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

I'm also trying to figure out the breeding thing. I've done a few searches and have a very slight idea as to what may work for my situation (3 roos, 12 pullets) My plan is to have a coop for my roos, and to toss one of them in with the hens I want fertile eggs from (in a grow-out pen or big dog kennel or something) for a day, everyone goes back to their own coop at night, and repeat if necessary. I don't know how long the roo has to be in with the hens, but I know that if he's doing his job, eggs should be fertile for up to 2 weeks (give or take). I'm hoping that such short seperations will prevent the pecking order from getting completely ruined, and hopefully the roos will all continue to get along. Ideally I'll be able to get my olive eggers, some more EEs, and toy with a wyandotte mix.
I could be wrong, but I don't think your plan will work. I believe that if you "toss one of them in with the hens I want fertile eggs from (in a grow-out pen or big dog kennel or something) for a day, everyone goes back to their own coop at night" they will just spend the day shifting the pecking order and/or otherwise getting used to each other.

I think somewhere read that it can take 2 weeks to gaurentee that the agg is fertilized by a certain roo.

here's my plan..crossing fingers hoping it will work

My plan is to make a breeding summer coop/run, it will be divided in two (or more sections), so I could have two breeding pairs going on at once.. So I can guarntee that the egg came from the roo I want, and I know which hen it came from (write on it with a pencil)..I will be reseaching the truth and exact time, but will plan on leaving the pair together for 2-3 weeks to make sure.

If I decide to just have on roo, I will still keep the hens seperate, but will move the rooster over to the new hen part way through the day...(hopefully this will give him enough time to fertilize some eggs)

I also have a silkie roo and dont want him to be fertlizing my cochins eggs...In the winter I will be keeping everyone in the same coop/run..becuase I dont keep eggs then, and its easier for chores.

Treats... Mine will eat:
tomatoes, peas, pumpkin (prefer cooked), acorn squash (prefer cooked), apples (prefer cooked), oatmeal, yogurt, bird seed, cracked or cooked corn (preferred OFF the cob), spinach, lettuce, eggs (crushed shell and all cooked), cooked chicken, flax seed, meal worms
That is all I can think of for now...

Olive eggers...
I have a RIR/BWA X
Rhode Island Red (brown egger)/Blue Wheaten Ameruacana (sp?) (blue egger) mix
(I will forever spell that wrong)
Anyway... she lays olive eggs... ( Her eggs are also very temperature sensitive... like mood eggs)
I have heard blue egger mixed with brown egger makes olive eggers

RAZ's eggs/My eggs

I also have a NN frizzle that I can't wait to see if she will lay olive eggs too... she is supposed to!!!

I have a question:
Does anyone have partridge silkies? I have a roo and would love to get him a lady... Just like him...
Does the partridge color breed true or will they have buff and black offspring (or a mix of the sort)???

Isn't he handsome! (Too bad his crow sounds like a car wreck)

So, I am planning to build a hoop house/ high tunnel green house this late winter to start plants in...I am wondering if that would work also as a chicken coop, I would build it so that the bottom three or so feet would roll up for ventilation... My thought is that by doing this it would make sure that they get all the possible light because it would pass through the plastic... any thoughts?

Oh and I almost forgot, looking for a new roo. Thinking a Wyandotte not overly picky on color as I have both silver and golden hens... If anyone has any please let me know. :)

You should only give enough treats that the chickens can finish in 10 minutes.

starbrightfarm.net breeds silkies.

Off to Lansing to babysit again.

Have a good day

I understand an olive egger as a blue egger crossed with a dark brown egg layer. A light brown egg layer would just make a light green egg. Darker olive drab eggs come from the blue shell with the dark brown pigment. Black copper marans are a common ingredient used for olive eggers, because of their dark eggs.

Went to work yesterday, just a normal day. Not quite. Boss wasn't too happy with some of the other departments. He switched me. Chickens love it - salad, tomatoes, squash, parsley, cabbage, cucumber, apples, blueberries, cranberries, grapes.. Talk about a position with benefits!
LOVE JOBS WITH BENEFITS

potato peels are bad bad bad for chickens if I remember the treat chart sticky correctly. would probably be good to check that.

I found with mine that it was really hit and miss when
I believe potato peals are OK if they are not GREEN I feed mine potato peals, I usually pour the boiling water from cooking the potatoes over them first. My birds love any kind of treat. if any one walks near the basement door(inside) they all come running. one of them is always on the watch, and they love there treats.
I have a trash can full of scratch mixed with split peas, whole oats, and BOSS, it lasts all winter
Does anyone know what breed of chicken lays the olive colored eggs? I'm thinking of getting 2 more come spring and would love to find out what breed lays those eggs. Or if anyone has a suggestion on some other neat colored eggs I'm open for suggestions, Thanks!
I have olive egg layers, EE roo, speckled sussex, there are different shades of olive, how dark are you looking for

Hello :) I am starting to hatch already (first hatch is due this weekend!) and usually get partridge silkies poppin' out here and there. He's a handsome guy! I've got more eggs going into the incubator next week and will start the madness of a rotating hatch for the next couple months :)
Oh, and your question on breeding true. I believe they will still throw blacks and buffs depending on what they are out of.
