Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

So...thanks to your threads...I now have 7 more chicks...lol. I stopped at Crazy Chicken Ranch after work today and picked up 4 golden laced wyandotte's, 2 Easter Egger's, and 1 silver laced wyandotte. McMurray didn't send me my GLW's so I picked up some from Crazy Chicken Ranch. The timing was wonderful because her chicks are only 1 day younger than the ones I got from McMurray. Also, I had 6 chicks die from McMurray...live and learn. I'll never order chicks in winter again....I assume that is what was hard on them.

I wouldn't hesitate to to buy from Crazy Chicken Ranch again. Everybody there was very nice and made me feel right at home! I wish I would have knew about her before I ordered from McMurray!
Sorry you had a bad experience from McMurray what did they say about the dead chicks? Are they going to resend? I got mine from Meyer they are really nice there and have a wonderful selection. They will be a year old this spring and right now I get almost 100% laying. Where is Crazy Chicken Ranch? I want some SLW or GLW. Have fun with your new chicks I am so jealous.

Ok, so we are home. Kelly made me promise not to get more than 8... So I took her with me and we came home with 10 LOL

I guess that means I win again LOL We decided to bring home 4 Jersey Giants and 6 EE's. She was down to 2 JG, but still looked to have quite a few of the other breeds. Silver and Golden Wy's, EE's, Leghorns, Maybe Isa's...I wouldn't hesitate to purchase from her again either! Very Happy with how they are settling in. I will be getting some guinea's from her come March I think :)...

Oh and Trefoil, not sure who that is, never met her but have seen her on the facebook groups too

TJ, I love my Jersey Giants I got mine from Wynette they are so sweet but huge! My blue rooster stands at least two feet tall, when I get home from AZ I am going to measure him. The hens are twice the size of my other hens. Funny thing is their eggs are most of the time smaller then the other hens. I get some big eggs, sometimes I wonder how they even lay them, lol. I was thinking of getting guineas but how do I introduce them to the hens? I want to free range in the spring and was thinking that they would protect and alert my flocks. I have three different coops.

tj - I have brooded chicks in a tank. I love it. We only use a regular 60 watt bulb and set it flush on the lid. It has been nice to keep track of the little guys just by looking across the room. As long as you keep track of the temp your good. After they get bigger we move them to a cardboard box - we like low tech and the fact I can burn the box not have to clean it.

No school up here again today as it rained on top of our snow all night. The back roads are going to be fun since they were still snow covered. We are staying home today.

I brought my chronic sneezer in last night. He's a Showgirl named Buzz. I wanted to try some antibiotic and observe him. The first thing I did was put medicine in his water and offer it to him. What I noticed was his comb is an odd Silkie kind of shape the covers part of one nostril. When he got a drink he got his comb wet which the water then drained off his comb into his nostril. I'm thinking now it may not be illness but his comb causing the problem. I don't think there is much that can be done in that case. Thankfully he is a late sleeper and didn't start crowing in the basement until after 8.

I have a couple Russian Orloff Roosters needing homes if anyone is interested. They are very friendly and I want to try and find them good homes. Puppy 1 and Puppy 2 will follow me everywhere and jump to eat out of my hand. They hatched in mid - June but are still not quite mature - just starting to show girl interest and still not crowing.

We have made plans for hatching eggs next week.

A little early for this year but they are for my son's 4-H project and we only want a few so they will get more attention and handling.
where are you located

Is that a printer to the right of the tank? You'll want to cover that with plastic or something. The dust those little darlings create is incredible.
If I didn't say this already I had 32 when all was said and done in my house, love those little chickies but never again I heard they create a lot of dust but I figured it would be within so many feet of the brooder oh no it was all through my house I still find it in some places!

LOL. I wonder why it gets so far and wide? My brooder is 4ft X 4ft and 18 inches tall with a covered top made of framed chicken wire. But of course I do want more chickies but later in the spring, early summer.

Just for the record, my neighbor no longer has any stake in this process. I bear no ill will towards the people who used to be my friends. I wish them well.
It is the prosecuting attorney that has issues and I believe that he is trying to use the power of his office as an offensive tool.
I was offered a chance to "go away" today, but I declined that offer.
Last spring, I was a dumping ground for orphans. I can do it again. I would be proud to do it again.
I think that statement helps make my case. Thank you.
Chicks in a fish tank really concerns me. You can cook those peeps in a matter of minutes. I'm not trying to bash you. That is NOT a good brooding pen for chicks.

Yes Raz!! Kill them with kindness that's the best way to deal with people like that they just want to fight and if you don't give them one they don't know what to do.
I agree sometimes people tend to take their positions to their heads, could be the clerk at the PO or the officer that stop you for the tail light that isn't out but he thought it was etc.....
I don't blame you I wouldn't go away either
Boy I wish I would have thought of you when I was trying to find a good home for my cattle dog, lol.
I was wondering the same thing about the fish tank it seems to me it would get way to hot if it was bigger they could get away from the heat, maybe put the lamp to one side or higher.

My step daughter is terrified of chickens, mind you she is 15. I hope the Jersey's don't scare her too much LOL. I only have one guinea right now and she does great with my hens. I have heard that they can be a bit more aggressive. Mine are for the same reason as yours. I want them for guard birds, also to keep the pests away.

Well they don't call you Silly for nothing

But really I hope you are alright. That is something I would do and have done. Ha

Cheapest is cardboard box... While they're small they're in the garage or basement. I like using totes for a while, but once feathered out I have a large wire brooder box they'll go in out in the shed.

This is the brooder box DH made... (it has a hinged lid also in wire). Works great. Has a divider in the center to have separate broods going.
Keep in mind that once their feathers come in, they'll try to fly out of the container so you'll need a lid of sorts. I use an adjustable window screen from the hardware store.

On a more entertaining note....... I totally gave myself a fat lip and bloody nose yesterday. Turned to fast to go back in the house and the slight spacial miscalculation caused me to darn near knocked myself out, hitting the door frame..... it was epic! LOL! Today I have a fat lip and bruised nose and sore tooth of all things. LOL!

I understand that there is also concern in using a rubbermaid tub? I have a large one of those that I could work with.
I used a clear see-through tub last year and it worked just fine. I used a dog crate grate on top that kept them in and gave plenty of ventilation at the same time.
