Is there a list started for helping out with activities or things people are bringing to sell yet??? I know Raz has the food chart covered. I know there is plenty of time but some things like if there is interest in T-shirts will take more time to prepare. any one bringing electric coop doors? I am interested in one of those. I would be willing to help with set up and clean up, might be good to have a list of jobs that need to be done so all the burden does not set on 1 or 2 people.
I don't know how to set up such a list but some are more apt with the internet
commitment is hard but if it gets on the calendar early it is less likely to get bumped off

Eh - got completely wiped out Thursday. Hubby and I checked around the coop and with the tracks came up with a weasel. I was set and determined it was a wily, ninja raccoon but it's proof positive now. Have you seen the picture of these cute buggers?? You would never suspect they're serial killers. So my 5 silly silkies, easter egger and Light Brahma are gone. Well, at least I can begin again, alittle smarter about birds. Less silkies (though I ADORE them) and some "real" chickens as my hubby would call them. I imagine by February all the wildlife is good and hungry.
That is horrible... I know the feeling all to well. You have to have silkies though. They are great incubators. LOL. Of course my NH are proving to be great at it too. AND vicious about it. LOL.
I sprouted some alfalfa for my chickens and they won't touch it. Nor have they set foot in the dust bath I made them last week. *sigh*
Give em time. Mine wanted nothing to do with the dirt pool at first... now they love it. They also weren't all that big on the salad greens when I started giving it them, but once they realised they weren't going to get fresh greens on their own, being locked in and snow, they are FREAKS when I bring in a bag of spinach/collards/spring mix... But boy are they fickle some times. I have been tempted to start growing pots/trays of cat grass and bringing it out...

OK... OPA or RaZ! This question is for you, or anyone else who may be able to answer this... I was thinking of grabbing a bag of clover and greens seeds from TSC, its for drawing deer actually, but supposed to spread and cover. I have an area around the coop and where the ducks were that has been completely decimated of all vegetation thanks to the ducks joy of rooting. Now, I could replant grass or something, but I was thinking maybe this clover mix would be nice instead. I'd have it fenced off to keep the birds out of it until it was started and took root well and was at least up over my ankles before I let the chickens back in that area. Would that be a good idea? Would it hold up to the chickens? It'll also be then in the area I will be ranging meat birds come later spring...

I have a large patch of clover that I planted for deer and the wild turkeys absolutely love it. I'm sure chickens would as well.

I am planning on planting clover for my chickens, i think they will love it, plus clover is good for putting nitrogen back into your soil

Ok, I'm jumping on this MI ship. Hi all!

I'll start with... Oh, man! Sorry your flock got taken out! We've been having trouble with coyotes around here for the last month. The more snow we get, the more coyote prints we're finding around the coop! GRR. Luckily none have gotten to our chickens, dwarf goats, or barn cats yet. The farm stores will start having their chicks in the next couple of weeks... You're gonna have fun picking out some little fuzzy butts! I agree with the other poster though. You've gotta have a couple silkies though, they are such good momma's.

....

With that said, I'll introduce myself a bit better. We have a small farm here. We don't produce much other than eggs for our own use, and we give some to our neighbor each week as well. No profit. Wife here, hard working DH (well, I'm hard working too LOL), & we have 3 kids. Outside critters are 11 "real" hens (he he)... BR, NH, Isa Brown, Australorps, Leghorn, Americaunas, Wyandottes... an awesome Light Brahma Rooster. A white silkie pair (we're currently trying to hatch out some chicks. Our second batch is incubating on the counter right now). We also have 3 Nigerian Dwarf goats (all wethers). Inside critters are 2 dogs (Maltese & Boxer), and 2 more house cats, currently 2 silkie chicks in the brooder and 7 eggs in the incubator on the counter.
