Michigan Thread - all are welcome!

Is anyone interested in 7 fertile eggs? Pick up would be in Muskegon (or on the way from Zeeland to Muskegon, but only on Thurs) on Thursday afternoon, Friday, or Saturday. I am picking up from Townline on Thursday and I will have 7 more eggs than my incubator can handle. Eggs are free. I would meet you along 131 for the eggs. Will be a mix of Buff orpingtons, Araucanas Ameraucana, and Ambers link.

Townline doesn't sell true Ameraucanas and Araucanas. They birds they do sell are actually Easter Eggers, hatchery created mutts. I understand they they mislabel their birds as "Araucana-Ameraucana-Strain", which causes a lot of confusion some folks. That doesn't make EEs bad, it just means that the birds are not the purebreds they are labeled to be...

I don't put mine in the refrigerator at all. One of my customers buy 4 weeks worth of eggs at a time and she doesn't put them in the fridge either.

My last ex-wife believed in the "magic spoilage". She would dump out an entire gallon of milk if the "sell-by" date was tomorrow because it would go bad at midnight.
Lol

Boy.....after three weeks these chicks are double their original size. They are starting to spar...which is very entertaining! They can fly up on their feeder, and I just built a small roost for them to see if their interested in it....if they are I will build one to hold them all.

They are also starting to get their combs.

Some look like little homeless birds the way their feathering out and look a little ragged...lol

At what week is the "Dinosaur" stage I keep reading about?

Here's a couple shots I took.

Adorable. I miss that raggedy baby chicken look. What is the dianosaur phase?

Dinosaur stage... I think he means that awkward ugly teenage stage the chicks go through when their feathers are growing in. Kind of scraggly & gangly. They tend to look like little veloci-raptors. LOL. I think it's around 4 to 8 weeks or so. You can't miss it. :)

The funny thing is...I really don't know how many I have right now. With the ones that died and the culling I had to do...I truly don't know how many there are...LOL
It's hard to count them when they are young, alll the flying running jumping around that they do. LOL I love the little ones. I have a broody hen right now and I don't know what to do with her should leave her to hatch them should I move her to another place? I have the perfect place, it a rabbit hutch really but makes a good brooder or a large dog crate, I forget this is a Jersey Giant hen and shes big.

Aggravated! Someone has made purchases on my debit card without me having ever lost it. Not sure where they got the number from but it could be anywhere in town. I've never used it online. So the card has been marked compromised and unusable now. I first noticed the issue in my account, a purchase that stood out like a sore thumb. It was a check with an absurdly high number and for a store I've never even heard of, way out in Arizona. Then, while on the phone with the bank I find out that a purchase was denied at a Walmart (I wouldn't be caught dead in a Walmart --DH works for Meijer HQ-- so I know it wasn't me, lol). I doubt the person was caught but I hope they enjoy their $300 purchase from Cowtown Boots, buggers. I'll be getting that money back, of course, but still... This happened to me once before, years ago. Some idiot used my credit card number to buy me some "special" certain organ-enhancing vitamins, shipped to my door and everything. Back then though, the cops actually, futilely came to your door and filed reports, which they did. Nothing ever came of it naturally, and I was refunded. No, I didn't keep the vitamins. I sent them back from whatever shady California shack they came from. If I could thrive in this country without cards and credit, I would in a heartbeat. But it's not realistic. We'd have no house. Necessary evil.

Oh yeah, and someone tried to hack my facebook account last month too. ALL of my passwords have been changed everywhere online, just as a precaution.

back from picking up the hens and one roo, the roo looks exactly like the one i have.. the mix she gave me was black astralorp, few rhode island red, maybe good combo with my delaware mix roo.. 1 maran, couple americana, lots of black ones.. they are settling in nicely.. got everything bleached they were in.. and got my daughters and i coats and snow pants in washer already.. so we dont contaminate the others..
i put de in the food, and in the straw/bedding. just in case..

How long do you all keep your eggs on the counter before putting them in fridge? My dh thinks if they are left out over night they will magically go bad.
as long as they are not washed, you can keep them atleast 2 to 3 months. ive read in other countrys they never refridge the eggs.. and sell them right on the shelf.
also they do evaporate after a long period of time. there is a interesting article on here about how long you can keep eggs that are not in fridge.

MaahBeaker!! Glad you joined us.

Naglady, if you need a Maran Roo, Krisrose has a beautiful roo that she would like to find a good home for. I believe she got him at Chickenstock last year. Was suppose to be a pullet.
